$hit, you dident even want to here about nitro a few monyhs ago,let alone 30%.Real pilots dont need 30% its called good collective management

I can fly around the sky with 15% no problem but I aint gonna overheat my engine for no reason.

You want to explain to the fellows how 30% nitro runs cooler than 15%.
Almost like leaded vehicles.

I wanted a nitro from day one just couldnt afford it or the club that goes with it or the AMA while I was learning with no sim or training gear.

But after my first spoolup with the sweet smell of nitro burning my main shaft was hardened.

I dont know about running hotter but there are alot of guys running coolpower 15% and loven it.And when you go with a lower %nitro you have to lean it out even more,so I dont see it running hotter ??

Maybe you are a rookie nitro guy!!!!

leaner is always hotter no matter what the nitro content. I can run rich as hell and have twice the power getting twice the lubrication and twice the cooling.

I am not making this up a guy in the raptor forum explained it to me this winter when I couldnt get my OS32 running with 15% at freezing temps and the LHS guy even said try the 30%. I did and all the problems went away I got a smoother easier starting cooler running engine with way more power.

I will not run anything less than 30% unless someone comes out with a blend that has the same power to lubrication ratio as I am running now with 30% and 26% oil.

Yup got to test out my limits today. I was flying the R30 up and down the runway and the wind was coming and going. It would be 2mph from the north for a whole minute and then it would swing around to the west and come at us at like 20mph! Then back to near calm again. Very unpredictable. Mike got caught in some near 20mph gusts for about a minute at one point with his new Logo500 but just hovered through it and continued flying 8s. Then I got up and got the R30 started and to the runway to find that the wind was holding more like 5-10mph. Yeah whatever. I took off and flew around for a bit until some REALLY strong gusts started coming. I mean I was having to lean into the wind while trying to keep the R30 in the air. They just kept getting stronger and stronger I am sure they exceeded 30mph and would not be surprised if they were peaking at 40mph. My heart was racing (that doesn't happen much these days) and I was just trying to hold it in a hover about 20ft up. I was having to be SO careful with the elevator to keep it from diving or rising 5ft almost instantly. It is one thing to see a 450 bounce 3-5ft up and down in a hover but a 6.5 pound bird I thought I wasn't going to be able to hold it for a little while but I just kept at it and soon it was over. The gusts lasted about 45sec I would guess.

Anyhow that was insane! The R30 did well but it had to be flown well or it would have been over just as fast as with my 450. Much less room for error there.

Hi all,
First post for me. I can barely hover out a pack so my wind limitation is way down there. Maybe 2 to 4 mph with my king.
I learned to fly planes in a cessna 150 and while I read about you guys flying in 20+ mph, I honestly don't know how you do it. Training, I know. But landing a 150 in 20 and above crosswinds can really pucker you up on approach to a country field. I'm not calling anyone out but, are you sure of these wind speeds?

For me the wind is simply another challenge --so to speak ! The more you fly in the wind the better you get at flying in the wind. Probably not a good idea to try something new in high winds- however there is NO rule anywhere in the "Heli-Rule" book that says you cannot or should not fly in windy conditions.
It's up to the pilot at hand-- the more you do it the better you get-- if you don't enjoy it-- Don't do it- if you take it as a personal challenge you will end up not only being a better pilot but also not limiting yourself to perfect weather conditions before taking your Lil Beearch out to play !

I know there are a few of us in this thread that fly in up to 15mph winds. I've flown both my HBK2 and Super FP in those kind of wind speeds. I also own a handheld anemometer, so I know exactly what kind of winds in which I'm flying. I've never let the wind keep me from flying. Now, I don't go out and try to fly in 30 mph wind gusts, but anything 15 mph or less...I'm flying.

Ok, guys
Thanks for the answers. These things are such feathers that, with my very limited skill set, almost any wind is a challenge.
I love calm air.

Yes, when first learning to fly helis any wind will be a challenge. However, as your skills progress, you'll be able to fly in more wind.

By the way, I'm assuming that you are a Nance? So am I .

Yes, I am a Nance.
Family on my fathers side are from SouthEast Missouri. Originally from North Carolina a long time ago.
This is a hobby that I will practice. Back in November my wife came home with an airhog she found used in a shop. We now have 2 lamas 1 fp 2 hb kings and 1 belt cp. As I wrote this my wife just crashed the FP into the entertainment center. We are both completely addicted. This is FUN.

My early Nance ancestors were from North Carolina, as well. We are probably related.

It's awesome that you and your wife are learning to fly helis together. I also began with the HBFP...it's a great little heli.

Pleased to make your aquaintance, cousin. Karen and I got Our pilots license together, bought ninja sport bikes together and we are doing this now. Still do things together after thirty years. These helis are great for this.
I know I'm new here and I don't mean to highjack a thread. I just wanted to answer Racin.

It's not been TOO windy but I did get a chance to try another gyro in an airplane today.
I have a Colco GY400 in my HBK2 and it's been doing quite well. I got 2 more and they were sitting around so I threw one into my foam plane that had an esky gyro on it and the GY400 does equally as well and are dirt cheap.

So you just hook it the sense wire into a spare channel and then use the epa to set the gain?

The setup in the Tx JUST like on a helicopter. Except I put the gyro inline w/ the aileron channel instead of the tail. The gyro is mounted to sense the roll axis instead of the Yaw axis.

I just fly it in Rate mode though. Head Hold is NASTY on takeoff and does not feel as solid as rate mode.

I just recently added a series of web pages on my website in response to some threads I started on rcgroups and wattflyer.

http://www.mycoolheli.com/gyro/

I'm trying to go through all the spare gyros I have and get at least 5 flights on each w/ my foam Extra 330L.
