To be honest I took Aligns 700 Kit and altered the design so it’s me that’s the cheat
I’m just glad Align are looking at what the customer wants and trying to meet demand, hopefully the price will be realistic so that we can all enjoy flying one.

Long live Align

Regardless, you have done some great work (hats off), unfortunately I dont have enough free time anymore to do the mod myself so will have to wait for the production version. looking forward to seeing how it performs against my Spectra with a 260

Back to square one with the clutch I’m afraid, sent it to the machine shop with the correct tap and when I got it back today the pinion drops in were it should screw in with play and I’m gutted.
Cant see me getting another bell as the funds have run dry and it was a favour job so no compo that end, someone is trying to tell me not to finish this conversion I'm sure.

Sorry to hear!

Is there enough metal to screw in a threaded insert? Obviously not ideal..but...although it really sounds like machining the whole bell would be the best way to go..

Yep enough metal left to sleeve it, ironical thing is I was going to do it that way but thought I would get it done right

Sounds like you had the wrong tap or your machinist is no machinist. Some times in aluminum the tap will gall up and cut way big that could of happened. If I'm working on a few pieces in alum i always use Tapfree cutting oil. Sorry to hear that. If i were you and i had a lathe i would make my own bell.

zorba has used the same tap on his conversion so I guess it must be the other option you mentioned, I have a lathe but it's just not accurate enough for anything were run-out is important.

Looks like I might have to go down this route again and make a sleeve from a 600 bell keeping the thread and press it in the 700 bell

say Peter can you see the threads in the bell?
How deep are they? I think he might of used too big of a drill and the tap just scored the bell with threads.
I measured the original pinion and is 9.80mm on the outside of the threads, so, the tap should measure 10mm on the outside of the threads. Why don't you measure the tap with a caliper.

Sorry to hear that you have to start all over again.

Cheers M8

Hi Bill, the threads look more like scratches your right, I’ve spoke to Kenny who did the job tonight and he said he did it on the miller and might have gone in too fast and will check the speed chart tomorrow.
I will get the callipers out in the morning bill and do what you say but what ever happens I think this one is doomed.

If you where in the US i would make you a bell free of charge. I know i can make one that would work perfect. Do not skimp on the bell or it will cost you everything. Sorry it did not work out for you your luck sounds just like mine. If you could send me the bell and the pinion i will make you one free. I just need something to go by.

Thanks

I agree with you smallplanes. I would do the same for Peter. He helped me alot.
But we have to deal with the postal service. Too costly to send something overseas and to UK.
I shipped a package to UK weighing 1.210kg and they charged me for 2kg.
Anyway like smallplanes says send it to him or me and we will take care of it for you if time is not pressing.

Cheers

What a fantastic offer and the second one today, its like you say a shame we are so far apart, Kenny has the machinery to make one from scratch but on an hourly rate it would be expensive for sure, if I get in a jam with this I would gladly send you them and see what you can do.
Cheers

Bell machined wrong!!!

That is good. Here is what I got. I got the original 600 pinion and bell. This is the pinion that I did the threads on the predator bell.

The first phot are the pinion, bell and tap.The pinion fits inside the bell.
Then the tap fits inside the bell also like a glove. So, I don't know what the guy did, but something is not right.
I still have (I think) the old predator bell here. I can machine it for you if you like and send it to you. Is not the HD one though

Or I can get a HD one from my supplier here in Canada and do that one. Is up to you. Just don't give up. OK M8?

Cheers

Thanks Bill for the info and offer of help M8.

I’m not sure what he’s done with it either but its wrong and there’s not much I can do about it now I’m totally out of funds at the moment so my only option now is to turn the outer shell off a 600 bell leaving a threaded sleeve then bore the bell out a bit more and press the sleeve into the new bell (what a shame) I’ve done this before and it works and at least it will allow me to get on with the rest of the build but I will have to change it later because its always a worry it might slip at some point.

You’re a credit to this forum and Hobby Bill.

Good news, Kenny mailed me last night and said he had used the wrong milling speed so it would have acted more like a drill than a tap anyway he’s told me to take the bell back and he will make me another one so that’s good but I’m concerned what to do about the liner, Century say the new heavy duty liner is not removable and must be installed at the factory so I’m not sure how to get round this at the moment if he makes another bell.
