Has NRI gone out of bussiness? I email them, phone them but no one replies. Yes you guessed it. I ordered them an autonomous heli last year. I paid in July. At first they seemed to be making progress but later it slowed and then came to a halt. It was never finished. Now I can't contact anybody.
I feel miserable.

I've seen this happen a lot with new engineer types who decide to get into manufactuering of a product for the first time.
I don't know the guys your talking about, but in general I've learned a lot from watching engineers, that you can never give them more than 20% down.

Once they get your money they have a tendancy to start buying expensive gadjets and new tools for their shop. Pretty soon they've blown all capital and are in serious debt.

Hi Guys,
I had met them for a demo before they were relocated in Tenesee. When I ordered I had paid in full in order to get a discount. They were nice people.
I paid 4 full turbine helis worth of green notes. Hey, just got a reply email from his assistance saying that nothing had changed at NRI but I should phone Michael. I just did but did not feel like leaving yet another voice message.
I still hope I get my order.
Cheers,
Ahmet

Too bad he couldn't make Huntsville work out. It just shows how much NASA has drifted from aerospace to politics that the aerospace startups are leaving Huntsville. Also shows how bad the job market is that everyone followed him. Maybe they switched to music & became a band. The neurals.

You think that is a trait of an Engineer? I think engineers are predominately honest. So honest they make terrible salesman. Ask any salesman.

What I don’t understand is someone blindly having faith in an unproven business with large sums of money.

I have been discussing with NRI to purchase one of their helicopters recently (december-january). I have been quite disappointed by their sometimes slow response time to e-mails, though on the phone they sounded very friendly. I have tried to ask some questions about the size and soundness of their business, though responses were very vague in that area.

Are you sure they are going out of business, or are they just slow to respond?

It's unlikely they have full time jobs doing this. They probably have to sell mortgages or cars for a living like everyone else because that's all the economic stimulus plans cover.

Perry once said the autonomous copters don't cost enough to cover everything that needs to be done. Everyone in that business has gotten the same complaints somewhere.

MIKE FU'shay drug me down a very similar year long path

Neural Robotics, is the worst pathetic excuse for a UAV / Aerospace / whatever company in the WORLD. Mike FU'shay is a joke of an engineer, businessman, and human being. His moral judgement and ethics rank about as high as a child molester.

When I ended my business relationship with nri, I posted a very long letter to everyone here on RR warning them of my experience. Unfortunately after the post became several pages long it was pulled down. I don't know the full reason why, but the result has been more poor souls like Helicek giving that con artist mike more money.

AceBird, for Helicek and my defense, nri appears to be a legitimate company. it is only in the last 10 months or so that they have publicly gotten a very deserved bad reputation.

Here are the Facts:

I would choose hobby autopilots that can be purchased for about $500 like the ap2000i or a helicommand 3a over a functioning nri system every single time.

nri builds very very VERY overpriced Vario helicopters. They justify these prices by adding on a POS autopilot.

Mike F.U.Shay has a habitual problem taking lots of money from people then not delivering his word.

nri's autopilot will wreck your helicopter

The autopilot is an 8lb "bowling ball" POS that has proven to be extremely unreliable.

During autopilot commanded lift off it is not unusual for the helicopter to float 50ft in any direction before coming to a stop.

If you can't acquire GPS you Can't fly. This is a problem that happens very often

If you loose GPS while flying your pretty much F'd

the autopilot has a tendency to flip the helicopter upside down during take off.

The autopilot although capable is never set for the customer to fly faster than 8mph because it becomes unpredictable and will wreck your helicopter

The autopilot can only travel on a flat 2d path. it can not ascend or descend while turning or flying straight.

The autopilot is built on windows DOS, and the user interface is terrible. It offers basically Zero user program ability. This means you will need to have mike help you with any little thing that may pop up. He is very secretive and after getting your money never answers his phone. good luck.

NRI does not keep a flight log. if they did you would see that they wreck helicopters all the time. If everyone knew how often they wreck no one would buy anything from them.

From what I can tell by talking to the past nri customers, it sounds like about 85% of all customers have had a horrible experience.

nri's entire business model is based on getting purchased by a larger company. it is no wonder why mike treats his customers like just another number. His main objective is showing sales in his books so that one day he can sale out.

I could go on forever so ill stop here for now

Again they build Vario helicopters. instead of paying a 10000% mark up just buy one and build it yourself.

Seriously how can it take a year to build a vario??????

The good companies in the same industry category build, test fly and deliver several helicopters per month.

So how on earth can mike justify a year???

I hope this post doesn't get removed like the last one, people need to know!

Thanks, this is very interesting information about NRI that I have been looking for but never found... From talking to their sales rep, their choppers are very reliable. It seems from your post that this point is doubtful to say the least. I was put off when the sales person refused to give me references of happy customers and was generally very slow in answering questions.

Cheers

I am pretty new to AP/AV, so could someone please tell me why so many people seem to have (had?) that much interest in this company? Did/do they offer some alien technology cameraship or what's the point with this NRI thing?
Helicek?

Thanks, Miha

Hi swch900,

What system are you using at the moment? Are you using a gasser or electric? What about the Carvec system?

Miha,

NRI claims to have a turn-key helicopter UAV that can be piloted by anyone without any experience whatsoever. Their platforms can operate in fully autonomous mode (with navigation) or with pilot in command. They offer operator training of 3-5 days which they claim is enough to fully operate their helis. Basically the pilot tells the helicopter where to go and the autopilot takes care of that, from takeoff until landing. That is similar to some other autopilots out there, but many systems recommend disabling the autopilot during takeoff and landing (or at least partially). Also, there's not that many turn-key helicopter UAV's out there. NRI is in my opinion also quite good in marketing their product. To my knowledge they have been featured in several magazines and also on discovery channel - a very nice way to grab attention. They also have a nice product lineup, ranging from small Joker-size to large turbine.

In all, it looks very nice from a distance. As we say in Belgium: 'nice from far, but far from nice'...

"Claims" being the operative word.

Again, "claim" is the key word here.

Which, of course, should not be taken as an indication that the product itself is any good. A prospective customer should start with checking out the glowing customer testimonials on their website.

Oh, wait. There aren't any.

Well, at least, check out the list of satisfied clients.

Oh, wait. There isn't one.

Attention, yes. But, of course, the question remains: do they back up all that attention with an excellent product and first rate customer service? Nope.

Do they? Or do they just have pictures of a nice product lineup?

Agreed. For those interested in NRI, as we say in America: "Proceed with extreme caution."
