hi guys!! scale at the nats were in full representation this year. out of 14 registered pilots only two didnt fly. both due to catastrophic failures that couldnt be repaired in time. the other 12 showed up and we did our static judging and flew two rounds. all the machines flew very well and no crashes were reported. Len Mount took 1st place again this year and Kerry muncie took second with Adam taking 3rd place. thats a westland scout, an ah64 apache and an ec135 respectively. great job and great flying guys. since we are expecting bad weather tomorow, we opted not to fly a 3rd round and head home tomorow instead. i am glad i got to fly my 58D and take it home in one piece. a good day no doubt. thanks to the guys at ama mag, model helicopter world and Mark and his daughter Jocylyn (please forgive the spelling if its incorrect) for covering the event as well.

Well, I'm glad Len pulled off another win with the Scout. He was really in a tight spot when his radio went south. I'm glad I was able to help get him flying. I guess the rest of you guys will have a price on my head now for some time

Erich, kudos to you for helping len, it would have been my honor to help such a great modeller and the nicest guy get his amazing machine in the air.

Home

Made it home today and have begun to decompress after what for me was a terrific NATS. I did manage to finish 5th in FAI, and while I have finished in a higher place, this was my best combination of flights ever. I was very pleased.
Scotty was very impressive with his nitro powered Super Gracey JR and the hard fought FAI win was impressive. Curtis flew a new prototype Rave 90E model that was only a week old to a very close second place and looks to be a real threat at the WCs.
Nick Maxwell flew his first FAI contest and gave an amazing performance. I look for him to be a force in F3C VERY soon. With him and Daniel Hiatt, we may soon have new challengers for a slot on the US World Team.
Matt Reubin made the trek from the UK to compete and gave a very good account of himself, especially in "A" schedule. Since he had not really practiced "C" schedule, his performance was exceptional.

Would be interested to know what heli Nick Maxwell is using for the contest. Would it be a T700 tuned to fly F3C.?

Nick

I believe Nick flew a Miniature Aircraft Tempest FAI with the Tempest FAI rotor head and OS 91 power. The model flew very well and he did an outstanding job, especially considering it was his first FAI contest. Well done, Nick. I also met his Mom. Now I understand why Nick is such a nice young man. An acorn does not fall too far from the tree.

Finally Home

Well, I finally got home sweet home a few hours ago. I had stopped by my folks place in central FL for the weekend.

I have to say this was the best Nats in my four years of participating. I think the sport may have finally turned a slight corner this year, despite the down economy. I was very proud of the new Class 1 participants in their efforts and improvements during the event. We all hope you guys come back for more, and bring some friends, too!

The job that Tom and Craig did was also outstanding, as always. My thanks also to the seated judges Dave, Fred, and Paul! It got pretty warm and sticky out there at times.

For now, the Ladies will get a well deserved rest on the shelf, and I will get back out on the lake for some boating!

See you all next season!

Erich
