You can see how far back the crowd actually is in this one. It also confirms this is the model show in France. I think they are just about the minimum safe distance.

look at the vid section of this site, shows a lot of 'World Model 2007' videos, and you can see chain link in front of the crowd as well as safety netting from the ceiling:
[url=http://64.233.169.132/translate_c?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.rcpilot-online.com/Aeromodelisme_r27.html%3FPHPSESSID%3Dc7cd8ec10638ed85bf6c821adff4a6bb&prev=/search%3Fq%3DAgenoria%2527s%2BCup%2B%2Bindoor%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-USfficial%26hs%3DTLM&usg=ALkJrhjr9ZRnt3dzblRmlXeWj56LiU613A][/url]

IMHO, the statement made about 'we should be responsible for our own saftey', I agree with wholeheartedly.

I don't want to argue if it was safe or not, I just think there are a lot of things we don't know about the situation.

I'm guessing it's one of the largest RC expos in Europe, and I'm guessing they want to keep it, so will work on being safe. Honestly I'm surprised at nitro inside, the exhaust didn't seem to be venting quickly enough to justify.

As usual, let's just use this as a reminder to make sure we make the right choices in flying our own aircraft safe, rather than argue a venue we weren't at. (anyone went and can comment????)

Well now I've seen everything.. That's just stupid not because it's a nitro but because it's a BIG bird and people are watching so close. Safety net or not. That was great flying but as someone said, it only takes one $0.1 bolt to come loose to cause a major accident.

That is a ridiculous assertion!

If flying at least 50 metres away from spectators AND using a safety net is still considered too dangerous, I would suggest that the hobby be banned entirely, as virtually every single flight anywhere would be likely to be more dangerous than that example.

Let's face it, the whole thread was based on lack of knowledge of the circumstances

I'm and Englishman, the show's in France... meh, no big deal.
Remember Agincourt?? I've still got my two fingers etc..

AHEM - now that I've got the (not so) wisecracks out of the way..

+1 Big Guy.

Not just safety netting BUT a CHAIN LINK FENCE...should be strong enough to fend off an errant 90...if not then we pack up and go back to bed.

Tach.

in a country where people take responsibility for their own safety and had the choice to leave if they felt the risk

I was visiting a European country where you could explore ice caves with no guide or safety gear, visit glass blowers factory and walk among the glass blowers while they were working, ride in an elevator that had no inner door so the wall is sliding past you. When asked I was told, if it looks unsafe and you get hurt, your fault.
Cheezz, in this old USA, if someone breaks into your house and breaks a leg, you had better shoot him cause he will sue you !!!

I sure hope some of these guys don't go to IRCHA because if they think this is close with a 90 they will poop their pants at IRCHA

A Raptor90 gas indoor? That is some flying I have to admit. Nevertheless, it is dangerous.

It never stops to amaze me how partial some people can be!
Some time ago there was a video of one of the well known pros flying a heli in a TV studio and landing it on somebody's head.
Everybody stated how heroic was it, I said I thougth it was not very smart and dangerous and I only managed to be called all sorts of names and got crucified for it.
Now here we have another video of reckless flying and he's an idiot.
Is it the fact that the pilot's name is not posted? I bet if the video started posting one of the big names a lot of people would be wowing it.

Sorry I had to vent it out since "that" time a lot of people shutted me up because I was "negative, doom day prophet, paranoid, doom day sayer, etc, " and stating that is was great for the promotion of the hobby to have somebody flying a heli
Sorry I still don´t get what makes the difference between a famous pilot and an idiot doing it.

There, now I did it...

I disagree. This is NOT an example of reckless flying at all, quite in contrary to the stupid antics of Szabo in the TV studio. Not all people disagreed with you back then...

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Ray,

You better be careful !! If you point out that something may be dangerous, you will be accused of "spoiling the mood" for someone !!!

This may be a stupid question, but what kind of damage will a 450 electric helicopter do to a person? How about a 50 sized nitro heli? How about a 90 nitro?

Obviously getting hit by a helicopter would be a bad thing, but will a 90 sized heli spinning 690 blades at full speed cut your arm off or decapitate you, or will you just get a real nasty cut? Does anyone have any facts concering real accidents?

Yap i remember one IRCHA

Helped this guy with his 60 size Xcell heli, Asked him have you flown this, He responded oh ya.

Put the heli in the hover, And turn it nose in, and oh boy the head came off the heli at 1800 rpm comming toward me.

Transmiter went one way, and i hit the dirt

I dont like ot get hit by anything spinning faster 1 revolution a MINUTE.

They all hurt.

I have a TATOO of a zinger prop from plan on my butt

Zingers are wood props and their not even sharp. Try an APC prop and taxing an airplane with no shoes on if you're looking for a quick trip to the emergency room.

But helicopter blades are not very sharp. I have seen them make huge cuts in the dirt, and I wonder what that force would do to bone. I think getting hit by a 50 sized nitro blade would easily fracture your arm or give you a serious skull fracture, but that is just speculation.

jrockstuart ,

Just start scrolling through this safety forum for topics that include a "picture" and you'll soon get an idea what damage can be done.......

The damage can range from just a simple bruise to more serious damage as taking someone's eye and even to death......

These "toys" are not to be taken lightly and that includes the 450 size variety with blades spinning upwards of 3000 RPM......
