Hi Chris,

I will post some pictures of the head assembly with the links and connections once I get to that point of construction. In the last day I've completed the entire tail assembly and have it mounted. I'm now moving into the servo installation phase. I hope to have an update by Wednesday night showing the tail boom and servo progress so far.

You are right though, the fit and finish on all the parts is unlike anything I've ever built before. Never built an MA, but I've heard of them. Never even seen one in person. I'm going to a funfly in two weeks, maybe I'll catch one there. My plan is to have my Avro ready to maiden for this event.

I'll keep you and everyone else posted. For now, I bid you a good week.

Steve

Build Progress Update - 03/26/09

Hi Everyone...

Well I've had a very good week so far with the Avro build. Things have continued to move along very smoothly and I've gotten a lot completed.

As of tonight, I've been able to complete sections 29-1 through 36-1, and section 39-1. These sections included the entire torque-tube and tail assembly. All four of the JR-8717HV servo's and the JR-8900G tail servo are in!

In addition, I've finished the head assembly and completed all the linkages though-out and mounted the RotorTech main and tail blades. I also managed to install the gyro mount and Spartan Gyro.

All that's left to complete now is the radio mount, switch mount, CarbSmart bracket, get the rest of the avionics on board, lipo, muffler, fuel lines, and a small handfull of little things. I hope to have her on her own onboard power by Monday.

As I've continued to state thoughout this build, is the shear quality! Things go together so well it's a wonder many haven't caught on!! ....This kit is a real joy to assemble.

So for now, here are a series of progress shots showing what I've completed so far. Enjoy.....

Other progress photos showing close-ups can be found on my build page. Feel free to go over there and browse around.

My build site can be found here:

Stay tuned, more to follow including the First "Roll-Out" shot with the custom paint prior to maiden.

Looks great but 1 thing. In the manual it tells you to use the supplyed servo tape only. Looks like you have some foam from the sparten on there.

I would agree with that - you do get the best result by just hard mounting the gyro. The suspended gyro mount really works well...

I have a small query. There apears to be a bearing block above the engine/fan/clutch mount. What is that for. I'm familiar with the Robbe setup which is almost identical.

Have to say this is where Robbe should have been heading with the much anticpated Milli 3. We all know where that went and the long term outcome for Robbe. I think Blitz will be attracting a lot of ex Robbe flyers. Very nice Heli kit, looks to be well thought out. Hope you enjoy your heli's

what your seeing is a guide for your starter shaft. looks like a small bearing block but has a plastic insert to guide the starter right into the starter cup.

Critteracing, Edvard R,

Thanks for the input on the gyro & mounting. I was looking at it last night and moving it around to see just how much it was actually able to move. I think I'm going to follow advice here and remove the bottom foam. I'll replace the foam with one layer of double stick. That should be all that's needed.

Thanks again,

Steve

Build Progress Update - 03/28/09

Hi Everyone...

Great news, the build progress is getting along very quickly now, and it's moving very smoothly. For the most part I've completed the main kit build. I'm now installing some of the optional brackets and in fit-out mode.

Over the last couple of days, I’ve been able to complete section 38-1 which includes the main battery bracket, installed the Outrage 2S1P 5000mAH Lipo, test fitted the Spektrum RX tray, installed the Spektrum Rev limiter sensor, and completed the fuel delivery system.

At this time I’m leaving off the header tank to see how the system works without it. I may install it at a later date. TBD

I also installed some Quick UK needle valve adjusters. Really nice item, much easier to get a grip on the needle valves for fine adjustment.

I’ve installed the Spektrum Satellite bracket and Satellite RX unit, completed the installation of the Hatori SB-19FH muffler which also required a modification on the fan shroud for clearance, and mounted the Main RX on the the Spektrum RX tray. (For now I need some room to move around in the frame for wiring, so I will hard mount the tray a little later). In addition, I labeled all the servo leads, Rev Limiter sensor lead, and the Satellite RX lead.

The list of remaining items to complete is getting smaller. Finalize the installation of the Spektrum main RX Bracket, switch mount, CarbSmart bracket, and a rather small group of little things needed to tidy up around the Heli. Tonight I’m planning to program my JR-9303 2.4 TX with the Avro setup, do the RX bind, and get the servo’s centered and trimmed, and finally any left over head setup in the next couple of days.

I can't go far enough to complement Blitz on this kit. I've gotten though the main part of the build without any hitches. I will be talking about this for a long time....

So for now, here are a series of progress shots showing what I've completed as of today. Enjoy.....

I've also updated my build page and you can find additional progress photos including close-ups there. Feel free to go and browse around.

Stay tuned, it won't be long now for that First "Roll-Out" shot with the custom paint prior to maiden.

She Lives!!!

My Avro came alive tonight on her own on board flight power!!

I had my JR-9303 2.4 all programed and ready to go last night. This evening I charged up the flight pack and bound the Spektrum AR-7100R RX. I completed the Rev-Limiter Calibration, and tested the sensing unit, and I got all the servos working and trimmed out.

I even had enough time to get the Spartan Gyro setup completed.

I took the time to work though the combination of TX settings and getting the head to move and line up in all the right places. I managed to get all the settings working per the setup manual.

The only thing I found was the linkage lengths from the swash plate up as called out in the manual were off considerably, and had to work out the final lengths on every one. I did set this bird up for "Stable/Sport" settings. I'm not sure why the numbers were so far off. I had to lengthen all of them quite a bit.

I'd really like to hear from others regarding the linkage lengths if this has occurred to them as well. Please let me know.

All in all it worked out. I got the phasing ring locked in and the head moves exactly where it should. Once I reset the linkages, the throttle & pitch ranges for Normal, Mode 1, & Mode 2 & Hold are on the money.

Well It should be only a few days and I think a maiden is in the works for this week.

Keep you posted.

Steve

Yes, the linkages were way off for me as well. I had to do the same as you did. I have the stable/sport config as well, but found the cyclic to be very responsive. Ofcourse it can always be toned down to being docile using the radio.

My avro needs a new washout base as I overtightened the bolts and now bolts wont tighten anymore, one of them is loose. I am going to install a x-treme 90 washout base and phasing ring. I really dont like the plastic washout base. But one thing is for sure, this heli rocks.

Build Progress Update - 03/30/09

She's Done!!!!

Great news, the build is complete and my Avro is now ready for her maiden flight.

In the last 24 hours I got everything finished. All the electronics are tested and she's ready to go.

Without further adieu, let me introduce the newest member of the Blitz Avro family. As promised here are her first "Roll Out" shots.

I have to admit, this is one really sharp Avro.

I hope you've all enjoyed the build progress as I did. Thanks for all the nice comments and support.

I'll post additional progress photos on my build page. Since the build went so quickly, I only had a chance to upload pictures and do a little textual discussion. Please check back in a week or so for a complete update of the entire blog page for page.

Feel free to go over there and browse around. The build site can be found here:

http://hdskullfire2.wordpress.com/build-blog/

Stay tuned, more to follow including some shots of the maiden flight activity.

Maiden Report!!!

I'm extremely happy to report that after all that work I put into getting my Avro flight ready, she has risen from the ground on her own power for the first time as of 4pm EDT here on the east coast.

I got about two tank fulls before the weather here started to go south. However, I was able to get some tuning out of the way on the YS91SR.

But I will say this, this bird is stable!!! Hands down. As a matter of fact, so stable, I only needed one or two clicks of trim and it just sat there! I was able to just hang it in one spot for 10-15 seconds in a light cross wind. Nothing like my T-Rex 600NSP.

Going to a funfly in Delaware this weekend, hope to get more tuning and some pics in the air.

Have a good weekend.

Steve
