well i figured I would share

I finally got to really fly a Vario XLC with the SPH5T engine in it. I've been hovering it for a while to get use to it, but never had it full speed.... today was the day

Man, this thing is a huge. It handles really well especially for a big machine. Its fast and intimidating but really gives you a thrill.

the only problem have is my flying field is now to small

here are some pics..more in my gallery

I'm curious as well but the airfoil is a bit thinner than the XLV blades. That should result in less lift than the glass blades. If I remember correctly, they are 35grams each, lighter than the XLV blades which should allow more power to them for lifting.

I miss flying mine but JetCat can't seem to get their act together enough to supply the correct turbine and repair my SPH5.... It's going into the 5th month now. Hopefully you won't have a failure any time soon. Mine pooped its garbox with less than 1 hour of flight time. Only three flights. Ugh!

It looks really nice though. How about some video.

Is that an auto pilot under the boom?

Hello,

I would like to know if you are using a head gyro on the XLC?

I'm using this head on the XLV which, aside from a larger main shaft, is the same as what's on my XLC. It flies very nice without a gyro with the glass blades. These videos are without a gyro and it shows how well it autos...with the thicker airfoil glass blades that are heavier. http://www.youtube.com/user/DKTek07

I haven't flown my XLC yet as JetCat can't seem to supply the proper turbine yet. Still waiting on that one plus a repair on my SPH5. Great service from those guys...

Vario makes a really nice product. I have 2 XLV gassers, a Hobby Parts turbine converted XLV, and the XLC. Not storage friendly but I love each one of them, even without a powerplant.

there is not "head gyro" on this model. it flies very stable and handles very well without any extra electronics

Vario XlC carrier

Hi there
Ive joined runryder to seek some advice and by the sound of things you are the guys to talk to.
I am in need of some help with a problem ive got with a Vario XLC carrier.
In the hover the helicopter is great and all seems good directions are right and it is very stable, but as i put it into foward flight it puts its nose up.I dont no if this is a trate of a three blader as im new to them.Have any of you guys had this problem?.Im using the SPH5T turbine,JR DX9 radio,Emcotec Rv Mini 5 powerbox,Groupner/JR C12021 Servos on the Swash,Futaba Gy 401 gyro,Im runing Glass blades with head speed of 890rpm at 5500ft above sea level. Please if anyone can provide some advice on what it could be or where im going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may have a phasing problem. Can you show a pic of the rotor head with the swash and swash follower in view?

Phasing is built into the control system on this helicopter. Also, all the controls are reversed, meaning, when the swash tilts forward, the heli comes back at you. Lift the heli by the head and check the nose weight. It must be nose heavy, or you will have this problem.

Thank you Guys!!
Christopher Here are some photos ive taken to show direction of swash in relation to stick input hope these can help..Please note the left of every photo is the direction of the nose of the heli.

Swash with +10 deg Pitch

Swash in forward Elev POS

Swash in backward Elev POS

Swash in Right Alie POS

Thank you Joe i checked CG and have made sure it is Nose heavy and am aware of the direction reversing to.In the hover it's all good and when i give forward Elev it goes forward but as it picks up in speed and not alot of speed!! it just starts porposing and i have to give alot!!! more Elev input to maintain level forward flight.

Check to be sure it is really nose heavy.
Also, be sure to set you pitch at half stick with the swashplate jig in place. If you need to increase half stick pitch, do not do this electronically in the radio, but do this by adjusting the pushrods. If you adjust too much electronically, the swashplate can foul on the top bearing block, and you will have little or no cyclic movement from the swashplate, if you need it.

Hey Joe, I'm not sure that I understand your nose heavy statement. Is it that the heli needs a lot of weight to compensate for the lack of a camera/payload being installed but the skids are still level in a hover OR is it supposed to be nose heavy in that the skids lift off from the rear first followed by the front?

I ask for clarification because the videos that I've seen seem to show the heli skids level in a hover.

Obviously, I haven't flown mine yet so I'm curious. The reversed controls seem odd as well but I can understand the mechanical phasing. BTW, why did Vario engineer the head on the XLC this way? I assume for some sort of mechanical advantage but not really sure for what or why.

Thanks...

From what i understand with the head, it takes some of the load off of direct pushrods going to the grips. This indirect way not only cuts the throw, but takes some load of the pushrod.
When i set this heli up, i make it so that the back of the skids comes off the ground 20mm before the front leaves the ground. That is with a 1/2 tank of fuel. This helps the heli stay level in a hover.

Thanks Joe,

that's interesting. Is the head just as stable as the one on my XLT?

For the most part, yes. My first test flight on one of these beasts was in 30mph winds. Outside of a little up and down movement, the heli sat there. Forward flight, if slow, is really nice as well.
