Air passes are starting to nigggle me - anyone know of a g-code optimiser to reorder etc cutting paths?

Cheers,

Bruce

I think Delcam has 1 but I'm not sure if you can use it as a stand alone
but have a look anyway there products are very good.

What sort of machine are we discussing?

Just simple G1 G2 G3 2.5D routing. Kinda tempted to have a go myself (software engineer by trade), but then again life is too short. I use DeskCNC, input DXF and it spits out g-code for it's custom controller, only it doesnt seem too smart in linking all the contours together. I couldn't give precise timeing, but I knida feel I could gain a 1/3rd in cutting time if things were jiggled around a bit.

I write this as another sideframe slowly appears from the dust! :>

I've got 3 different CAM systems here in the shop and I can only guess that you are doing the bolt holes, inner and outer contours of each side frame.

Does the router make a lot of retracts high over the part and then have to rapid back down to just above the Z plane before feeding to the final depth and starting the contour or does the software have difficulty deciding what to do first ? Does it break up the contours and do random sections when it really should be doing a complete section before moving to another detail?

OK, I think problem solved. I have been using TurboCAD/DeskCNC for all DXF/g-code creation, but just invested in a copy of TurboCAM for TurboCAD. This lets you control the process much tighter, and hense reduce air passes.

Will let all know of my progress.
