I am in the middle of giving the Avro a winter checkover and noticed a bit of play on the tail. If you hold the head still and rotate the tail, mine had about 10mm of play.

I removed the boom and the front tail drive assembly and found there was movement between the cross drive adaptor and the gear. The gear was slightly loose on the shaft and the hole in the shaft, where the pin locks the cross drive adapter to the shaft, had elongated slightly.

Worth checking if you have any play on yours, or the next time you remove the boom.

had my crashed yesterday luckyly not a major one, the tail started to spin before it crashed after checking I found that the pin broke off I know mine have some play on it as well. This might be the cause that make it snap off. I think you'd better replace the pin as well as the bevel gear to be on safe side.

Apparently the early kits had a thinner walled pin that could deform and cause play

They now supply a thicker walled pin to prevent this

Got the new parts on and it's exactly the same

Not detrimental in flight though as once everythings spun up it's constantly loaded and driven, but I am going to drill this and put a shanked bolt and nut through it

Hi,

if i do not mistake (i'll ask to Neal) the stronger pins are looking like the normal ones, but the metal grade is stronger.

I had one time that issue but i found later that it was my entire fault, i simply did not give any slope between the cross shaft adapters and the torque tube, so the tt was "pressed" between the two cross shaft adapters, then i left 0.5 mm slope and never had that issue again.
I had as well a bit too much gain on the gyro, not really helping..

Best regards,

Fabien

I drilled the hole and fitted a plain shank bolt and locknut in the end
