So, I have this tricked out all metal eco8 that's fun to fly. With an 11.1v 8000mah FP Lipo I fly around :25 minutes. It's nice and r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g when compared to my other helis.

My question. Can the Eco 8 be turned into a 3-d machine?
I'll be buying new batteries and was considering a 14.8v 25c 4 or 5 cell 2600 to 3600 lopo for the eco8 but I'm not sure if the motor ant esc will handle it.
Plettenburg Orbit 15-14 with a 24 tooth gear
Hacker 40-0-heli esc

I know just dropping the weight to a smaller battery will greatly improve flight characteristics but I'm looking for more. Any advice would be appreciated.

Been there done that!

I had much better luck with 3D after I went to a 4s lipo. I eventually swithched to a more robust 8mm mainshaft when I bent a mainshaft in flight. I got away from the problematic Ikarus head with that mod. I am now using a HDX/Lepton head on it. I love to fly the old Eco's but my Outrage 550 is a heck of a lot cheaper to fix.
I cannot comment on the motor/esc as I am not familiar with it. I am using the Century 550 outrunner in mine, tons of power on 4s lipo.

Parts are too expensive and it is too fragile . When you bump up the
head speed bad things happen.

I have one I run at over 2K headspeed and it's a monster, until this year I've abused it heavily for trying new manuevers. It's over 5 years old

It was not originally designed for 3D but there are upgrades and tweaks that you can put on to make it fly very well. Parts availability in the US is a little tricky these days but you can get them from Hobby-Lobby and a few others.

I wouldn't recommend buying a new one, get a used one that probably has most of the stuff you need to fly it hard. If you can find one with the ORIGINAL H8 (not the newer ones made in China, the original H8 made in Germany), you are in pretty serious luck. That motor on 4s makes this a rocket.

Most popular mods for 3D

Metal head with mixing arms flipped to get +-10 degrees
MS or MAH Carbon blades on main and tail
One way bearing
Brushless H8 or Hacker B50 motor
Aluminum front frame stiffner
Aluminum 120CCPM servo brackets
hardened main shaft, and tail shaft.
Metal tail slider
If you can still find them, carbon fly bar paddles.

I recently tore mine down and am going to rebuild. Admittedly I don't use it much since I got my Lepton but it still is a pretty nice machine.

If you already have the metal head, try and find some carbon paddles for it. Also flip the grips over to leading edge and flip the mixing arms 180 degrees to give more pitch.

Run the head speed right around 2K (make sure you have EVERYTHING balanced).

Mine does all the standard 3D tricks including all the pumping and hard stop maneuvers.
