I have a little confession, i have already put the turbine onto the frame... i would aprreciate you just checking over my work for my own piece of mind, as the instructions for the plumbing were based on the old sump style Wren, of course i have the new version 4 fuel fed system..

I look forward to meet you again matey! this is gonna be one nice machine... as i have set it up myself and know every bolt and nut, i am happy there is no binding anywhere and the tail is going to have a lot of authority, something i havent experienced on the scale machines i have flown in the past, All its cost me is a curry! and a Mac Donalds!

Blimey your not hanging about, last pics you sent me were of an empty frame! Well as I have always said 2 sets of eyes are better than 1 so yeh I will look over it for you and try and pick fault

While I'm at it you might want to check over a new gadget on my machine see if you think it's any good.
Told Will about you building your engine through the night until 5am while I was snoring on the couch. He said, 'No change there then' that's what I always do at his place.

Well we've just completed the first test run of the Wren gas generator mated to Zealous gearbox and as you will see in the airframe too, and appart from fogetting bring the gas in from Matts car last night, and setting the gas valve on the new engine all went well as you will see in our live unedited warts and all video coming to this post soon.........
I really wanted to go for a test flight but Matt has to get back home and by the time we charge the batteries on it....well....time waits for no man. What a shame because it is a beatiful day, I'm in the mood for some rotory winged action!!
Matt will get the video up tonight I'm sure.

Really excited by Matts Zealous heli, I only ever saw one in the my early days with helicopters, the Wren engine looks completely fab in all it's shiny glory... mounted on the tail boom it reminds me of a supercar engine... you know from the days when engines really looked like WOW or HOTROD!!! Not like the plastic looking ones you get now when you lift the hood. I am still buzzing from seeing it fire up and run.... yes me after all these years and 100s of hours with turbine helis!!
I suppose for me it's because the Zealous was the first turbine I really lusted over.
I remember being in Austria reading John Tanners article over and over. I eventually opted for the Predator because it was very accessable and well........cheaper.

Not much i can say really to follow that.
I am really pleased with this machine, and as i have built and setup myself i am a lot more confident with it..

The build has gone very smoothly, just a couple of things i need to address..

But here is the video take 1 and 2 of me and bell, i will say we have had a tonne of fun doing this and althouhg this is video is done in light humour i hope it will show how easy these Wrens are...

Both bell and myself are really having a ball with this machine.

WOW, I've been watching this thread and you two make me jealous. I'm really blown away with the service Matt has received from WREN. I'm at a hotel for some computer certs and the internet connection really SUX. I can't view the videos but I did watch Bell in the first one whileat school

. Caught me off guard with the turbine resting on the box. I'm so used to needing a motor mount. It sounded real nice too.

Matt or Bell, can you supply a link for Zealous? My search engine doesn't find one for their home. I'm considering one for the 407 that Rotor George is building. This thread has my curiosity quite high. You two enjoy the build up.

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

Great video, I like this conversion I wanted before to put the my wrenn 54 MK3 with the predator mechanics in a fuselage. This was almost impossible but with the turbine on top it should work.

Look forward to follow this topic.

Thank you guys for the nice comments,

We both are having a laugh with this, whilst at the time learning, Bell has never had a zealous and it is brand new for me as i have just moved over to Wren.

there is couple more things i need to do before we do the first flight,
but it has been a real nice experience.
As you can see int he vids we have tried to make it informative but also light hearted and try not to get too serious, well it is hard to with Bell skipping around...

Just proves you can have a laugh and learn at the same time....

Rotortec are bringing out 2 new fuses this year for the zealous, they are bringing out an Augusta 109 and a Kiowa, both are suited to the zealous as it means the turbine is in the scale position..

I will be interested as to how they over come the Retracts, with all that weight.. but that's for another thread...

The thing that amazed me was that, Matt had built up the Zealous/Long Ranger Mechs, I connected the Gas generator to the gearbox, then I nipped downstairs to the car to get the instructions as to how to put the engine in the thing. Well I was only gone for 2-3mins by the time I'd got back Matt already had it in!! He said I think it's in....and well......yes it was....what a hoot!!

You can literally take it out in seconds, well I recon you could get it out in 60seconds if all the tools were laid out in front of you. Sorry don't know why I'm going on about that, it's just such a simple machine to work on and with very robust components. As a conversion it's not the cheapest I guess, well what I mean is that it's not Predator money, but having seen one in the metal now I can see why. Everything Oozes quality basically.
I do really want one but, I still want to convert something tiny to turbine, with a MW44. Anyway Matt got there first and this is his thing, I just enjoying the process and watching Matt getting stuck in.

watching the video there is only one thing that would worry me about flying that machine and that is forgetting to turn on the pump to the gearbox,have you thought about conecting the main switrch with the pump switch so when you turn it on you turn both on at the same time?
or some other means to ensure you havbe turned it on?

Yes i agree 100% that was my first comment as well.

I suppose like anything in this world a strict routine is essential.
We are thinking of doing a warning light which will be lit when pump is running, or as you said, wire it into the fadec switch, which you have to turn on or else turbine doesnt work..

I spoke earlier on about the mast bearings, and how i did not understand why they had thrust races on a 15mm shaft,

well here are the 3 main bearings, as you can see they are massive,
hence the reason these are sufficient.

how about no switch or battery on the gear box pump? just have it wired direct to a generator, that way the pump starts automaticly when the rotors are turning???

yes they do , abit like an alternator on your car the full size have a generator to top there batterys up and keep there eletrics going.

if you get a jewel generator. you could place a gear on the shaft that goes between the gearbox and the main gear. you could do it two ways. have the jenerator monted below it parellel to the shaft and have a belt and pulley or two staright gears. (just need to file a flat on the shaft and hold the gear in with a grub screw.
or you could mount the generator below it again this time with a bevel gear. a bit like the tail rotor gear on vario!

I used a belt and special ordered gear on my XLV to get the rpm where it needed to be. I mounted up two belts in case the original failed. The second belt sits between the frame set out of the way like the start belt on the old Hirobo Shuttles. Dissasembly is not required and the new one can easily be in place in seconds without taking anything apart. The jewel works really well too.

what Head Speed is your Xlv running at ?

the highest i could get mine was 980rpm, but i was recommended that unless i used the Metal blade upgrades from hobbyparts to not let it go any higher..

Fortunatly this is not a problem on the zealous as the shaft is 15mm and the spindle is 10mm, and the Wren is not capped to a certain speed..

I know of one flyer in OZ who is running his at 1480rpm, and the longranger 1380-1440 rpm,
