We are in the process of designing and building a permanent pit area with tables and electrical outlets. I was wondering if you guys could share your pictures of your local club pit areas and ideas of the perfect pit area. We are planning for over head lights, water source, electrical outlets for charging and permanent BBQ grill possible wood stove for the winter. We are also building removeable walls for the summer. Do most prefer work tables at waste level or chest level when staging, starting or working on their helis. I think basic concrete on the ground would be smart due to fuel and oil spills. Any type of materials on the tables or just wood? Thanks for all your help and ideas. I would also like to see the nice views of your field as your looking out.

At our club we built tables out of wood like 8 years ago. They are about waist high on me and I am 6'2". I personally prefer the waist high tables for helis because at chest height is not as comfortable for me when starting. We also built some "starting" stands for the plane guys that are to old to bend over.LOL The tables are holding up very well thru the michigan winters. We leave them out all year. Our field has a concrete pad that the main pavilion sits on as well as the pole barn for the tractor and things. The transmitter impound is under the pavillion as well as a wind meter and picnic tables. Otherwise the property is all grass. Has cyclone fencing for pit area and the flight line. A set of bleachers for spectators too!
We dont have electrical or plumbing, we use a generator for events to power the loudpspeaker. Our feild is in the middle of a corn/bean field so it wasnt practical for use to run electricity. A member built us a huge grill that stays at the field all the time. We also have some small normal grills. This is the club website. http://radiodrone.net/ I would take some pictures of exactly what you are looking for but everything is under a foot of snow right now. If you go to the website and click on the "photo" section then you can find some pics of the general setup.

No pictures

I dont have any pictues. But what my club has done mainly do to vandlism. is ran electric across the ceiling of the covered area. and T'd out conduits out both side of the light bulb box in the center and put outlets on them. Then when we need to get to them durning an event are need. we have 6 foot cables with 3 outlets on the to bring the power down. And tie wrap those to the support poles. The conduit is mounted on the roof to keep little punks from grabbing them easily. This has worked thus far for about 3 years now. we also remove the bulbs when not in use and put in plugs into the socket to keep the wasps from building nest in them.

But if you go to www.propnuts.com there are some pictures there

Is it the weekend yet?

certainly can't but in truth, the UK mostly has grey skies and is windy. A day of flying with skies as in those pics is memorable and a rarity.

Apart from our heated clubhouse, our pit tables are knee high , about 2 feet by 8 feet dimension , treated 2x4 and plywood covered with synthetic turf green carpet. They hold up to the sun pretty good, are easy to make, and we flip them over for mowing under them.

Pic

Don't have a pic of the pits, but this pic of my 700 was taken from the pilot station on the edge of the runway. The green section is almost golf course quality, the brown is field that grows and is cut a couple of times per year.

Some nice photos, Good idea of large tables outside the pit area. by the way we are a RC Helicopter club so we don't have a runway for airplanes just all grass. but do allow electrics that can be hand launched. any more photos? I will have to take some pics once we complete this project.

Here are a few to look at - hopefully these will give you some ideas.

We are a Planker and Heli club - so the pit area setup tables and the flight boxes may not be what you are looking for exactly.

These photos were taken at our HeliFun event last May. We built this field new about 2 years ago.

I'll try to describe it a little for you. We have a larger and taller center pavilion area, that has the freq board, etc. in it on the flight line side - a center wall about 5 ft. high in the middle - and then another covered area on the back of it facing the parking area... where we set up the grills, coolers, and stuff for the funflys.

Extending off of each side of the center pavilion, are the covered pit areas. They start about 12 ft. off of each side of the center pavilion (a 12 ft walk way space between the two).

In front of all of this is the flight line fence... with radio trays built into it.

We have movable flight boxes - that are basically hinged on both sides of the center, so the sides collapse into the center - and these sides have a wheel on them - so the box can be rolled around to where ever we need them to be.

Benny - Justin just happened to be in a couple of the best photos I had to show here. Tell him "Hi"

There are lots more photos of the field and the event here, if you want to see some more to look over:
