Has anybody done this mod to their beam? Is there a kit you can buy?

The Beam doesn't really need the chineese mod done. The tail authority is outstanding out of the box.

Talk with Heliheadcase about the mod. He can tell you how to do it.

I haven't heard of anyone doing that, but maybe try getting a longer screw for the tailblades and sticking a ball on each side, then on the end tighten it up with a locknut?

I did the mod on mine because I knew from experience what kind of an absolutely dramatic difference it makes when using metal tail grips on this size heli.

If you're skeptical as to how much your tail servo has to do just remove the main blades, disconnect the tail servo from the tail push rod, anchor the heli down in some way and spin it up. Try pushing and pulling the tail push rod and feel the very significant force required to move the thing. Now do the weight mod, much less force to no force depending on the amount of weight you use. IMO there should be some center tenancy.

No matter what servo you use or how good you think your servo is this mod will make a huge improvement in tail control from how well the gyro holds to consistency during traveling piros. The group of people that will benefit the most IMO are the people that are into traveling piro maneuvers such as piro funnels, piro loops etc. To those that think tail authority is great out of the box, you clearly haven't tried the mod. If all you're doing is hovering or easy forward flight, you probably don't need to bother with it.

Btw you don't need a kit, just a drill, bit, 2mm tap, 4 stainless steel linkage balls, and 4 screws short enough that they don't bind on the bolts that hold the grips to the hub.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

Not doubting that this will work, but just how does this make a difference? With the extra weight on the grips all I see it would do is act as a flywheel effect. Is this right? Please explain more on the theory.
Thanks

For all the info you could ever want go to the 450 section of helifreak, sort the threads by the most views and start reading the thread at the top of the list.

There is a great kit/jig you can buy if you wish to add the weights to your grips.

http://www.k2heli.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TAILMODJIG2

I think it was designed for the TREX 450 alum tail grips but with one wrap of cellophane tape around the Beam tail grip to snug it in the jig, it works equally as well.

You can drill and tap each grip in less than 30 seconds. Do your own experiment. If you don't like the results, you can always remove the balls from the grips and fly as before.

Thanks!

Ball links too heavy for beam

I drilled and tapped some holes on my tail grips on the mill at work, then attached ball links per my understanding of the t-rex chinese weight mod. When i spun the tail up to full speed i found that the weight was too much and wanted to force the grips to maximum pitch & required a significant amount of force to keep them centered. feeling that i'd rather have the failure mode tend towards zero pitch, i removed the ball links, replaced them with a nut and adjusted the screws in and out until it required almost no force to move the grips - but they still wanted to center themselves.

here's a picture:

I'm not sure if i effed up the trex tail mod or if the beam requires less weight, but i'm happy with the results - the tail holds ++good.

Ball links work absolutely flawlessly on the beam, at least with the stock tail blades, kb blades, and trex blades. Did you do your "full speed test" with blades on or off? The tail hold fine with or without the mod. With the mod piro maneuvers are much more consistent.

I tried the mod by simply putting a longer screw with balls on either side, but I shaved a .05mm off each ball so it didn't hit the tail pitch lever whilst at zero pitch BUT there was to much weight causing the tail to chase it self, which the gain could not fix. I have PM'd Heim Joint from Helifreak to ask if the TREX 450 custom screws will fit the Beam, or, I might simply follow what King air has done as it looks neat and tidy.

Spun it up with no tail blades. Good call, that's probably what did it.

I did it to mine and what an improvement it made with the force it takes to move the push rod. I will be doing it to my 250 soon

This is what I put togther really quick from parts I had laying around. makes a difference for sure but I think I could use a little more weight. I used silver washers that come with the Beam and some blue Trex washers, londer bolts and just a nut with some locktite. Seems to be working ok. I have been running this for a while.

I got my chinese weight from HEIMJOINT on Helifreak. They are for the Trex V2 and also fit the Beam nicely.

I still havn't worked out how to get the photo shown without the rest.
