So the 1600 scorpion motor that's on my trex 500 that I have about 30 flight on decided to eat bearings about a month ago. I finally just got around to replacing them and I put the readyheli ceramics in to see if they would last any longer (exact same dimensions of the ones that I took out). I got everything back together and noticed that there is about 2mm of up and down play on the can when I pull on it. Is this normal? I can't remember. But anyway, I installed it into the heli and as I was setting the mesh I noticed that as I twist the main gear (meshed with the pinion) that that 2mm of up and down play turns into 2mm of lateral play? That isn't good and I don't remember it being there.

I'm just about to throw this motor out the door! My 500 has performed flawlessly with the exception of this dang motor.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I had the bearings and shaft replaced 2 times before I put high speed bearings in . Ive had no problems yet but can tell motor is getting ready for bearing and shaft replacement . I did change motor from stock to Scorpion back to back to see if it benefits me . I felt that I got same performance for my flying (hard 3D) just a bit more heat on speed control and battery.I read here on RR that if you turn down RPM on motor it will not go thru bearings. Now then I would say that defeats the purpose of buying a Scorpion in the first place.
blbills , You can adjust up and down movement by tapping shaft further into bottom plate of motor . I have the side to side also a little seems OK but as bearings go bad it get worse and pinion to main gear noise gets nasty

Yep: get an NEU motor 1706/1.5Y and you'll forget about all the others. NEU motors sound great in the air, and power is excellent. NEU motors are known for their electrical efficiency.

I put their oil in after every 5 to 10 flights, and have 74 flights on my 500 with this motor (Scorpion) without a problem yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Please don't ask if I worked or flew today....I would not like to lie to you

I wish I had the funds but I just had to drop $400 into new tires for my car. Merry Christmas, eh

My center shaft is solid. I can't budge it at all. Any ideas? I'm sure that if I got most of that up and down play taken care of that it should be OK laterally.

Hi Guys,

It is recommended that you oil your bearings every few flights. If you do so you shouldnt have a problem.

Jeff, what setup are you running on that scorpion 1600? I havnt much experience with the 1600 but i have seen a mates 500 go with a 1600 and it goes very hard over the stock motor. I have a 1900kv motor on 5s with a 120A speedy (prototype) and i get around 3100 rpm and it nuts. But the 1600kv motor shouldnt have much less grunt on 6s.

As for the lateral play, I think you need to replace the motor shaft too. Like you said, the motor ate the bearings.. but when that happened, the bearings will in turn, ate the shaft..

Just replaced my (1400kv) bearings today with Boca ceramics. I've got about 100 flights on the Scorpion motor, and I have (really) never been happy with it. I ran a 14 tooth pinion on the stock 500L and had 5min flight times. With Scorpion, I ran the 14, then switched to the 15 tooth pinion as my flight time decreased to 4min (80% rule on FP 2500mAh packs). 4 minutes is too short. 5 was ok on the stocker and I would have replaced my original crashed motor with another Align one, but the Scorpion was $15 bucks cheaper. Maybe I haven't read the cell count / KV / pinion tooth threads closely enough....

Words to the wise: I did not realize that Innov8tive changed the bearing design. Readyheli sells an OEM V1 and V2 replacement bearing set for the 3026-XXXX motors. I just thought they replaced the two lower bearings with one fatter one.... RH was out of stock on the V1, so I ordered two sets of the V2s. One I needed now and one for the future. My motor has the TWO lower bearings setup and the new single lower bearing will not fit. Once I got them and realized they would not work, I ordered the Boca V1 set (+++$). Moral of the story, check before you buy.

I ordered the wrong set too. Readyheli took that set back and sent me the new set for $0.

I'm happy with my Scoprion motor. Their oil seems to be the key, and good stuff too.

Alright, I finally was able to move the shaft to take care of the up and down play and that seemed to do it. there is still a tiny bit of lateral play but it's useable. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I sure do love the power this thing puts out.

Try a Z15A-1620 instead. Those Scorpions have too many issues.

I've had a bunch of differnt Scorpion Motors, and 'all' of them had bearing problems that lead to bearing and shaft replacements. Who ever heard of having to oil bearings in an electric motor, especially so often.

I can't argue with the power they produce and at a good price, but common, oiling motor bearings? WTF...
