There was a post here on Runryder around 5 years ago where someone had boom mounted a parachute. He posted a video of it in action, It did work but added a bit of weight to the rear of the heli. There was a lot of negative responses as in this post, Haven't seen or heard about it since. So this is not a new idea.

parachute

A good 36 inch parachute will slow 6 pounds down to around 20 fps and shouldn't cause anymore damage. Achieving proper deployment is the key factor.

its a good idea! but for a 6 pound heli, i would thinh a 50 inch parachute would give you the nice soft landing you would want. ( u know, not pop a link or break anything!)

For it to work right the chute will need to be pyrotechnically deployed such as with a small rocket motor which would pull the whole package out.

I only crash due to random planetary intervention

The parachute idea is not new and i am sure most of us have thought about it at some point after a crash. using a parachute to float a camera ship or a jet engine powered helicopter would make sense as these helicopters are heavy and expensive but for a 3D heli is just adding more weight so does not make sense. although it is worth a try i look forward to seeing it.

I like the air bag idea (even though it was a joke). Seems that it would be more lighter and more fool proof than the parachute. A big airbag on the bottom would be good for AP (I assume you AP guys aren't flying upside down). And for guys who are maybe a really small airbag on the headbutton. Even if pops on landing, it's bound to take some stress away- you'd probably still lose the blades though.

If you are going to be flying at AMA field or event, you gonna have to run that by AMA first as airbag does contain explosive for its deployement.

Or...

Everytime you fly just have 4 people carring around a blowup cushion and follow the heli around, juuuust incase?? Hell, or even just place and old hide-a-bed in the middle of the field and try to auto her on to it

I would think the best thing would be to have a few small co2 bottles like for air gun, and be able to flip a switch, and inflate several airbags, to soften the impact.

You would have to ballistically deploy one of these things like they do on aircraft. You are simply not assured what orientation the heli will be in when it fails. With a couple of exceptions, whn my helis have gone in, they have done so way too quickly to deploy anything.

air bag timing and deployment is so quick it would never work. reason being is it take about 2msec to deploy depending on which stage they fire which is dependent on the impact for car airbags. and they also dump the air fast aswell so dont think the car air bag would work. who knows
