(Expert) zero hours on sim. Once i learned how to fly i stopped useing a sim(XTR refex) because i could never get them to feel like the real thing. Maybe its just me but the best way and fastest way to to learn is just do it.

I've been flying helis for two years. I spend about 6 hours a month on the sim (Phoenix RC).

I've been flying for about 3 years, and I use the sim every time the weather is inclement on a flying day. Also, when I'm bored...which is never, I have a 2 year old son, so I'm never bored

Wow! Interesting responses. Please KEEP LEAVING MORE. I do fly the sim a lot and just wondered if this is really helping or not.

Love to hear from more users.

I casually asked a few locals and it seems I spend way more time on the sim than them.(Perhaps I need it more than them) Kind a made me feel like I was over doing it. I know I have progressed though.

I don't think you could really over do it, I mean even if it's only keeping you fresh on orientation, it's still being productive, and the more you fly, the more it becomes natural. I do however notice that certain 3d tricks, are easier in real life than on a sim, maybe that's just me.

Hello

I'am happy that someone ask this question because I was a bit shy.I think that I spend to many hours on the sim

If it was like the real thing I was almost as good as Lukas Riva I think. But I like it verry much to make your thumbs more precise.
I must say that when I fly the real thing I'am getting frustrated because things ore not goinig so good than on the sim.

I had reflex XTR for many years, maybe its time to get Phoenix,I don't know but One thing is for sure.SIM and REAL is not the same.If it was the same we al where masters.

I do maybe one hour a month. Probably less most of the time.

I'm from the old school. I learned inverted at about 300ft. Learned nose in by slowing down to a stop from forward flight. I learned auto's by running out of gas. And I learned piro flips by flying when I had to pee real bad. I can not think of a single thing that I did on the sim before doing it for real. I still like to toy with the sim, but I find it very hard to use as a real learning tool. I wish this was not the case.

There is no doubt that actually putting fuel or a battery in it and going for a flight beats the sim hands down. I still enjoy the sim though, especially when you don't have a chance to get to the field.

I guess I disagree becasue Ive done it the new way using the sim.. then applying what I learned on the sim to real life.

So far that works for me..
if I can do it 9/10 times on the sim I can do it in real life just as well.

I guess I dont have the fear that some do of the real thing.

I was taught in the Navy using sims for everything as well.
anything that will train your hands and brain to perform tasks will work in practice.

So the hand and eye and brain movements are exactly correct for simming and then applying to the real thing.

Ive learned everything from hovering in all orientations to now doing flips and rolls and stalls using the sim.

Guess I'm a product of the modern age where video games and such helped me learn hand and eye coordination.

Pros do use sim, just check interviews here in rr
they learn the new manoeuver, practice timming flight to music
then they polish things for real with many many gallons of fuel...

Dont be shy, if you practice a lot you are probably better than your fellow friends who practice less. Unless they are full of talents

Varied results for sure

Thanks to everybody for posting. I didn't leave too much indication as to my hours flying on the sim. Wanted to see non-bias results.

As for me. I fly G3.5. No intentions to upgrade but my buddy just got Phoenix and tells me I'd better check it out.
Bought my G3.5 in July of 07 and started flying casually. On Dec 1st 2007 I made a commitment to fly 1 hour a day for the next year to see if I had what it takes to become a good heli pilot. When I started last December I was still crashing on forward flight periodically. When I missed a day or two I made up the hours after work. My life is busy with all the house work and paying bills and working. To be consistent with the 1 hour a day commitment, I get up at 3:45 am and get to the sticks at 4am. till 5. I have easily logged over 325 hours at least. Without too much invasion on my regular life.

For me I have learned lots. My flying is much better. I have more fun now with less crashes.

For each their own. I am amazed at how each pilots answers are so different.

Thanks for all the replies and KEEP THEM COMMING!
