This topic is for all people who are interested in or who are using the Zimmerman Rear-Mount Muffler for the Miniature Aircraft Spectra-G.

This is a continuation of another thread which was recently closed:

http://runryder.com/helicopter/t460862p13/

There appears to still be considerable interest in the use and application of this product which I believe warrants the creation of another thread to continue the discussion.

The last post in the closed thread indicates that mods have been made but Raja suggest waiting until his gets sent in (next couple of days) for final twaks.

Going out tomorrow

My zimmerman is going out tomorrow with the spacer and modified drawings on how the specs should be. I'll try to print out a couple of pictures from my gallery as well today to include with them muffler.

Raja, please keep us informed as to what you, Mr. Zimmerman, and Alex at RCMarket decide upon for the final tweaks on this muffler. From the pictures I see on the other thread, it looks pretty good. However, I think you are the only person who can give the final seal of approval. When everything is complete and the negotiations between you and Alex and Mr. Zimmerman are over, and when you are totally satisfied with the product RCMarket has for sale, please let me know and I will be the first one to place my order.

Thank you for being willing to send your muffler away to Zimmerman and for taking the time to talk with Alex. Your generosity benefits all of us who want the perfect Zimmerman Spectra-G muffler.

Zimmerman Muffler for Spectra-G

Again, Thanks for the restart of this thread. I wonder who closed it??
I noticed on Alex's website (RCMarket) that the RCZM 2620SPG is back on the listing, in the revised configuration. Looks pretty good hopefully Alex can send Xcal the new one to check out for us....just a thought That way we will have the best of both worlds, A Fit & Function with Flight Test and Raja's Prototype at the Manufacturer for comparsion Hmmm....

Can't wait till spring.

Raja told me he is sending the prototype muffler to Zimmerman tomorrow along with the finalized drawings and diagrams as to how the final production model should be. When we finally get these muffler in our hands they should be perfect. We are really indebted to Raja for sacrificing so much of his time and energy to help Alex and Mr. Zimmerman create the perfect muffler/header for us.

Sounds like things are progressing well on the custom muffler design - I hope it works out all right. I just flat haven't had the time to get down to the shop and make the next round of mods to my muffler. I don't think it will take too long, but there have been far too many other things demanding my time lately. Once I do, I'll definitely post the results.

I appreciate the thought Vic, but I think I'm pretty much screwed, since I've run the muffler and drilled a few new holes in it. Would be nice though. I'm learning a lot in the meantime.

BTW Justin, should this thread be back in the gasser forum?

Yes, I should have started this thread in the gasser forum, but I am new to RunRyder and didn't know that I was starting it in the wrong forum. Unfortunately, I don't know how to move it now.

Alex told Raja he has been banned. I'm sure he is monitoring this forum, but he can't post anymore. I have a lot of money already tied up in this project, and I think it is not only convenient, but absolutely necessary that we be allowed to talk with the manufacturer of the products we are experimenting with.

We really need to get this muffler thing taken care of. I am bored with it. The next project we need to work on is a new modified Zenoah G270 engine that a guy out of Chicago is designing and Bill Meader is testing.

http://runryder.com/helicopter/t478090p2/?p=3896268#RR

It looks to me from the last photograph that Alex posted that this muffler design is getting close to being production ready. Raja is sending his prototype muffler out in the mail this morning. Raja installed his original white teflon coupler and flew the helicopter so the coupler would mold exactly to the correct shape. He will ship it together as a unit. Zimmerman will be able to take all the relevant dimensions straight from the muffler and provide us with a perfect copy.

When Raja gives us the go ahead, then we can start flooding RCMarket with cash. But everyone please wait until Raja gives his approval. He is working directly with Alex, and so Raja is in charge of the final approval.

Its in the mail

I did speak with Alex today and he explained to me what zimmerman has done so far as we as we discussed what I'd like to see done. Apparently changing the muffler inlet pipe to go out further requires a new mold, and zimmerman is resistant to do that as there is alot of cost involved in making a new mold. He thinks that what they have is OK, but I said wait and let them take a look at my muffler first, along with the letter that I wrote.

Anyways, I wanted to tell you guys that its on its way to Germany, and I'm officially grounded with the Spectra for the rest of the year. Hopefully I'll have it back by the new year, and that it will be a good fit for all.

If "to go out further" is to clear the canopy, then the whole muffler can be offset 5mm to clear the canopy. Seems like a reasonable solution, as I don't think a 5mm offset will affect the aesthetics at all, but will mitigate the pipe being to close to the canopy.

I got my muffler at the same time as xcaliber. I mounted mine direct on the left side and made an aluminium spacer on the right. I used the spacer that comes with the engine for the can muffler to move the header out clear of the canopy. First test showed viberation at tailpipe so I shortened the mounting brackets. The muffler now sits about 1/2 inch behind the frame and all seems well. I also noticed the tail drift I had seems to be gone. I had to richen both needles. Not sure if that is muffler related or weather related. I have 8 tanks on it now and no problems.

Paul,

Could you post some pics? What you did is what I have been kicking around. If I do what you have done, I could get the muffler from a State side vendor, which would save me some money. I've seen Zimmerman universal mufflers for $189, but I don't know what the spacing is. This is a significant amount of savings to me.

If you wait a little while until Raja is done working with Alex, you may be able to get your hands on the perfect custom built Spectra-G muffler for a reasonable price. While it may cost a little more than the universal Zimmerman muffler, when you include the price of the mounting brackets plus the extra time it takes to tinker with it, it may be worth it to get the custom one. Besides, I think it will look really nice when it is done. Raja took many measurements off his existing prototype muffler and if Zimmerman implements them all in his final design, it will fit perfectly right out of the box.

That being said, I would like to see these photographs too.

That's interesting. Perhaps the moment-arm from the mounting holes to the muffler body could be making the vibration problem worse. On the other hand, I haven't shortened the flanges yet because I want to have some space between the muffler and mounting holes to allow heat dissipation in the length of the flanges.

I also noticed the nagging tail drift problem seemed to be diminished or gone as well. Part of this is in the tuning, because I can get a little drift to come back depending on how I have the needles set. I'm still experimenting with this, but it certainly seems much better than before.

As for the needles, I had to lean mine out quite a bit after putting the new muffler on. Of course, that may have been because I was running the stock can muffler beforehand. I still need to get out and do some more flight testing. Don't think it's gonna happen this weekend, perhaps next weekend. . .

Paul,

It looks to me that the offset installation is a positive option worth looking into. The muffler and header pipe clear the canopy nicely without sticking out to far. One more angle would be appreciated: If you could take a photo of the back of the Spectra, so I could see the muffler position as compared to centerline of the Spectra.

Thank you for the pics. Nice work.
