MOTELS/LODGING! Updates on SRC event

I know some of you probably never think to read the thread on a particular post from the beginning to the end or if you are like me you are too lazy to look back and have to search through all the different postings. But here is the motel information again for those that need to start making their lodging arraignments.

Motel sponsor: NEW "Hampton Inn" reservations will be taken until August 17th, 2009 for our event. Must mention (Southern Rotary Classic/ and or radio control Helicopter event) to get their attention. Reduced from 109.00 per night to 89.00 per night for pilots. Regular room, with 2 queens, or 1 King size bed, and free breakfast with everything for this price. Taking reservations now..5-8-2009.

Call direct 903-572-7100 ( new IHOP) next door too!! This a very nice hotel with an indoor swimming pool and workout area for those who might want to relax that night after a long day of flying

Motel sponsor:
Executive Inn ( not the newest motel in town, but clean) near all restaurants also. Dial direct 903-572-6611. Mention Southern Rotary Classic / helicopter show etc. for special price.
$49.99 with 2 double beds or 1 queen size etc. plus any tax.
Reservations deadline. September 11, 2009. This is a nice inexpensive motel for those that just want to have a comfortable place to rest and sleep after a long day of flying at the field.

These are our two sponsoring Motels. They offer discounts as stated.

There is another hotel that is being completed on the South end of town close to the field but for some reason it seems like it is taking longer to finish this hotel then the other two recent additions to town. So I am not sure in two months if it will be operational, but these other two hotels are in a cluster of hotels on the west end of town by the interstate, with restaurants within walking distance.

If you have questions about the hotels contact Weldon by email or PM him. Hope to see every one here again this year. We plan another fun gathering this year.

Drag Racing, If enough people show interest in this we can indeed try to do something for the pilots. It is all about doing things that everyone enjoys.

I went by some of the local hotels late last night, just to see what kind of attendance they might have by checking out the cars in their parking lots.

To my surprise, the parking lots were nearly full, especially in the Hampton In, one of our sponsoring motels and this was in the middle of the week. Weekends are even worse and the other motels were pretty full as well. I am not sure what it is but this town seems to draw a lot of travelers that stay in the motels and Hotels. There are 5 Hotel/motels on the west side of town by the interstate and they all seem to be pretty full although there will probably be enough rooms for everyone. There are some motel Hotels on the east side of town and they seem to be pretty occupied as well.

So guys don't wait until the last minute to make your arraignments and possibly get left out, especially if you are interested in the Hampton Hotel.

The executive motel has been a sponsoring motel for years and although it might not be as fancy as the Hampton or some of the newer motels, it is a good inexpensive motel that allows you a place to stay and relax after a good day at the field and for a very reasonable rate

The event is just over two months away so I also want to start signing up people for the non sponsor demo contest. Not sure how many people that want to enter but I just ask that you do it before the event starts and not walk up at the last minute wanting to get in, so PM me if you have any interest. You know who you are so let me starting hearing from some of you guys.

I also want to keep pushing the Night Flying contest as well, open to any body and any type of helicopter. Hopefully we will offer something to the top amateur as well as the pros that take off with the the cash in the cash box. I can already tell it is going to be On!

I got to see my first drag racing at Heli Blaze. It was pretty amazing. JustPlaneChris won it with his A123-powered Protos, just like he did at IRCHA last year. He won't be able to make it to SRC this year (some lame excuse about a 20th wedding anniversary trip to New Zealand), so the field will be wide open.

IRCHA really doesn't strike a chord with me. I compare it to a megachurch: there's a lot of people there, but you have little chance of meeting even a small percentage of them. Plus, I don't like crowds in general; SRC is about as crowded as I can stand.

The Executive Inn really is pretty nice. My wife and I stayed there last year. I'll be bach'ing it this year since she's busy that weekend.

Hi Alan
I like drag racing too, but we will see how it goes. If enough people want to do it, we might find time to close the flight line down and try some drag racing. It would be a nice event to do maybe Friday evening. I think there will be quite a few people there Friday so we will see how it goes.

Thanks for posting on this forum as well as that other one too.

More details later,
Terry

Drag Race

The Protos kicked my butt so I'm coming back with a modified Trex 500, it's got a Hemi. I'll be there Saturday for sure. These are all great events, but as a suggestion if we can't close the flight line we could do a small 450 size drag race where we won't use up too much space, plus we may get more entries with people who may "risk" the smaller birds.

You don't have to close the flight line if you just hold the race across the street, flying towards the water.

Hi Jeff
I kind of like that idea, however, according to AMA regulations it is really not safe to do more then tuning and light hovering of your helicopter from behind the main flight line which would be across the street.

The reason being, if you have two flight lines with guys flying 3D and all kinds of flying from two different directions it could cause problems. What if someones looses control of their helicopter while flying across the street, with almost everyone's back facing the opposite direction on the other side of the street it might not be good, even if they are flying away from the covered area toward the lake.

It has been pointed out to us that we need to be more cautious about people flying across the street. Therefore even if people are flying across the street going away from everyone I am sure the AMA would frown on that.

I hope you are not disappointed by what I a saying but we have to follow the rules for safety. If someone was to get hurt at the event, it would really be a downer and we want everyone to have fun, but do it in a safe fashion.

So I am just giving everyone early warning that any kind of serious flying across the street will not be allow.

We will try to have plenty of pilot stations on the main flying site.

It probably want be a problem to shut the flight line down for a little while and have some drag racing if enough people would enjoy seeing it and participating in it.

Even though we might not be able to implement it, Thanks for your suggestion Jeff and look forward to seeing you at the event.

Please define "serious". There seems to be a gray area as far as sport fliers are concerned. We don't just hover and we don't bang the sticks, but we typically like a big flight area.

Last year, flying on the ends of the main flight line seemed to work well for me, but I was never sure whether I could fly across the street.

SRC event

Had to edit this post. No flying across street from main flying area, due to request from AMA. It appears that there are two flightlines when we fly some helis across the road, so we have had to rule out flying in that area during our event. Sorry..

We will have Scale competition, Expert, Intermediate, and Novice type events as well as the demo and night flying, and auto-rotations of course. We will try to put out some event descriptions before long. The night fly is going to be competitive this year, on Saturday night.
Any more questions, just post them. We are working on ideas, but have not posted everything.

September 18,19, 20 in Mt. Pleasant Tx, is the place to be!

Hi Jeff
Look forward to seeing you in Mt. Pleasant. We hope to bring a bit of Ircha to Mt. Pleasant. I look forward to Ircha but in recent years the SRC has been a close second in my opinion.

We look forward to having another great event with a lot of really good pilots coming again. Defending XFC champion Jamie Robertson, and runner up Nick Maxwell will be here as well as Curtis Youngblood. Hopefully we will have Bobby Watts back and Bert Kammerer has commited to coming as well as Vic Campbell, Ron Lund and Nathan Spencer.

Scale guys bring your birds too, I am sure Weldon will have something nice for part of the program.

I also want to keep pumping up the night flying. Guys I do not want to hear execuses about not having a nightflying machine or I crashed my heli during the day and have nothing to fly.

Several people are going to walk away with a wad of cash, and if everyone else is waiting to see who is entering, then someone might miss out, so come prepare to do some night flying. You do not have to enter the contest, but come prepare anyway.

One more thing, we are "hopeful" that we can also give away a prize to the top amateur night flier as well.

I am going to come this year. This will be my first time to this event. I have missed the last two and it is right down the road.
I love to fly at night, so I will bring my night gear. I am no pro, but can fly pretty good.

How about doing a two part night flying contest. First part is for average night flying person, and the second part is for the pro night flying.

Joe

Joe the night flying should be out of this world this year. Nick Maxwell, the two time defending Ircha champion is unbelievable and suppose to fly at Mt. Pleasant this year, so I have thought that maybe we might give away something to the top 3 guys regardless of who they are and then give away something to one non sponsored pilot.

I have talk to a number of pilots and some more top pilots are committed to coming to this event as well as some great sponsorship.

More ideas coming forth once I get back home from Ircha.

Just got back this weekend from having a nice time at IRCHA. Although some may think it is a bit to big, it really is a good event. But now it is time to push the SRC and start to give out more details of what we plan this year.

In the past the SRC has been a lot like IRCHA but smaller, so we hope to bring some of what they do at IRCHA back to our "mini Ircha" of the South, but without feeling to big.

I want to remind everyone again of our nightflying contest. I spoke to Nick Maxwell who won the Ircha night fly this year. He indicated he would do some nightflying this year either a demo or by entering the contest. Several others have spoken of nightflying either in the contest or just having some fun with it.

I talked to several more top pilots that have stated they plan to return again in addition to the ones already on the list.

I am hoping to get some of the Ircha guys down for our event this year, wait, one of them already lives in Texas. Brett Walker are you reading this?

Darrell "Big D" Bell who is a good pilot and also well known announcer from Ircha and puts on a heck of a helicopter show himself, has stated he plans to come to our event this year. For all of you that have been to Ircha, you know big D. For all of you that have not been, he is really a fun guy to hang around with, so D I hope you are able to make it and see how they do it Southern Style.

Spoke to a number of sponsors at Ircha and got some good commitments from them including Ely Q, now if only we could get them to bring the models along also.

So guys, it time to start getting more excited about this event. It is a little less then 5 weeks away. If you have not made your hotel reservations please do so soon.
