John A Gorham memorial service

Hello,

I wanted to add the addresses for the memorial service and mini hover. The main memorial has changed locations. It's now up in Newbury Park.

The main memorial service will be at:

Unitarian church @ 3331 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park (near Thousand Oaks) on January 24th at 1pm. The event will be catered. There will also be a short video clip and display. You can meet other family members there plus other RC enthusiasts.

The service will be followed by a celebration "hover" at the Condor field in Camarillo @ 3pm (http://www.cicondors.com/CICondors_...es/location.pdf).

Email: johng.info@gmail.com or call 760-560-7230 for information. You can also just show up.

Thank you.

IRCHA '09 Cricket Mass Hover

Im working on making arrangements to hopefully have both Mr. Gorham's own personal last Cricket in his possession and one of the two GMP Vipers attend and hopefully both fly in the mass hover!

IRCHA '09 is schedlued for Aug 12-16 What day is the Cricket mass memorial hover scheduled for?

Do we have a preliminary Cricket head count so far?

CRICKET

I have a Cricket that is autographed by John, I got from him a couple years ago. When he sent it to me he stated it was one of "his" personal Crickets.
I have it restored but have no intentions of flying it. I plan to bring it.

Thanks.....Dave

The Last Cricket Will Finally Fly in August!

Dave:

You have one of the last Crickets then! Bring it and fly it!!!! It was meant to be flown!!! Maybe just don’t fly it with the autographed canopy…just in case!

Id have to guess that John gave away most of his helicopter-related materials during the past few years, only keeping a few things for himself.

This was John’s last and only Cricket when he passed away. Except for the engine, it looks brand new like the day it was put in the box at the factory. It was never completed…still needs a couple of hours to make it ready to fly. Unless someone has one of the early prototypes with the upside down tail, this particular Cricket will be the star of the memorial mass hover.

Out on the flightline, look for the red canopy (the yellow one is cracked), the funny heloball muffler with the exhaust pointing straight out to the side, and a special bracket connecting the tail boom to the main frame.

It will be a very poignant moment when this final Cricket is completed and flown at IRCHA. Looks like JC will be its new owner, and I cant think of a better home for it.

Cricket

WOW
The Cricket I got from John is the same color red, Century 21 Red, and the same color heat shrink on the blades. The one I have John Flew. I have the Cricket that I learned to fly with that I'm gonna fly for the mass hover.

It looks like I'll be the only Gorham there due to my stepfather passing away recently and his memorial service is on the same weekend in Prescott, AZ. This ties up other family members and I'm only 100 miles from Muncie.

I look forward to meeting many of you who have called and emailed me plus relating some of my father's extraordinary life even before he moved from England to America.

Just look out for a crazy Englishman in an Electric wheelchair and introduce yourselves.

A remote Hello!

Michael,

Sorry I can't be at IRCHA to meet you and participate in the mass Cricket fly. Was looking forward to doing honor for John.

Take care,

Hi Steve, I'm sorry I won't meet you too.

I haven't bumped into Peter yet but I'm sure I will on Saturday morning.

I spoke to Dave last night who is kindly going to show me where to park and gave me the physical address for the Jamboree to fee into my GPS.

One day I will post about my father's early life in England before he moved to America which is even more remarkable than his meteoric career here.

John A Gorham

Hi Micheal

If you want more 'permanacy' with regards to John's life story then instead of just 'posting' it on Runryder would you consider letting me host it on my site as well. Ok it is only a few months old but it is intended to have everything about anything RC helicopter wise with the only limitation the number of hours in the day I have to upload and develop it...

Good idea Joe.

I can be contacted on 765-364-4971 or worldofantiques@peoplepc.com

I do have my own website but it's mostly for friends and family about my adventures England and America so yours sounds more suitable and will reach the right audience.

Mine is http://www.worldofantiques.net

I'll also dig out and scan what photos I have of dad.

Time is also a factor with me as I'm selling around $250,000 worth of antiques a year on ebay and do all my own packing with just one arm!

Bob, it was great meeting you and all the other wonderful IRCHA members who made my visit so pleasant and memorable. 7 1/2 hours sitting in my wheelchair in up to 90 degrees was very uncomfortable but I barely noticed it due to the fun I had.

It really was incredible meeting so many who knew Robert and dad from the old days and their efforts were a fitting tribute to his modeling career.

I'll be posting more later including pictures but here's one to be going on with.

Thanks Ralph and Larry.

It was actually a very emotional time for me - as some of you know, I didn't move to America until 7 years ago and the last time I saw dad was during a visit to Mum in Thousand Oaks, CA about 30 years ago.

I've seen Robert a few times relatively recently and we've reminisced over a beer in the Palace bar, Prescott, AZ.

Obviously with an arm paralysed I don't fly though dad did send me a Cricket back in '82 and I easily built it using my foot as a second hand!

Mick Wilshire of World Engines kindly designed and made a TX for me with 4 functions capable of being operated with one hand, the main stick having vertical and horizontal with twist for the third function and a side lever with a loop for my little finger to operate the throttle.

To cut a long story short, I am the only person in the world to fly a Cricket inverted - while it was on a long tether! When I say fly, that was when it crashed upside down. Maybe Robert could do it but I just could not co-ordinate 4 functions with one hand!

If I come to the Jamboree next year, can someone tell me how to hire a golf cart as that rough ground in my wheelchair played havoc with my back. Preferably one with those two dolly birds in!

It was an honor to fly in this event and an even bigger honor to meet you. I had the little purple and white cricket. Thank you for coming out and hope you do make it back next year
