Are there any in the works from any companies?? Are there any kits to convert a nitro 50 without any hassels?

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly better than I can pilot them

at least one mfgr has built a model around the Zenoah 20cc motor which is a bit smaller than the G231/g260 motors

irregardless they will be heavier than a glow counterpart simply because the motor/carb/muffler/ignition weighs more. As a result they usually crash uglier (more weight, more inertia, more broken stuff) and perform slower (and I would argue more gracious) maneuvers.

I'd like to see more interest in gasoline I/C platforms given the current cost of glow fuel and electric systems. Hopefully we'll see some more new offerings as time goes by.

I'm in the process of building my own version using a Raptor 50 and a BME ST90 gas conversion... http://www.bmeengine.com/

I know there's been a lot of back and forth surrounding this particular engine, so I'll say this. I love a challenge, and I'm good with engines, been building them in all sizes and shapes for the better part of 30 years now. I feel pretty confident that I can make this setup work at least as well as a stock Raptor 60.

I'm planning to document the whole project, and hopefully I won't have to eat the last sentence of the above paragraph

If you can make this work, I am keeping my R90. See you this weekend at the field

No sooner did I hit submit reply and the UPS truck pulled up out front. The engine has arrived along with a box of Raptor parts

The ST90 next to an old Webra that normally fits in the engine bay of the 50...

Ummm, this engine is a bit bigger than I anticipated, I see some mill and lathe sessions in the garage in my future before this bird gets off the ground!

Lee, I may need a larger airframe, maybe I do want to buy it after all

So now the engine size doesn't appear to be a big deal, the engine does fit after some minor modifications to the plastic frame...

There are side benefits to using the Raptor 50, it's easier to get the right gearing for headspeeds up to 1800 or 1900 rpm, the plastic frames are durable and cheap, and parts are readily available. Stock Raptor 30 maingear is 86T, 50 is 85. Either one with an 11 tooth pinion looks to be the most favorable gearing setup and probably what I'll start off with. Figuring the engine is good for 13,000 to 13,500 that puts the max headspeed at right around 1750, perfect for what I plan to do with it, which is to eventually put a scale fuselage on it.

The big issues are going to be the engine mount, landing gear and lower canopy mount, along with throttle linkage. I've got a stock Raptor 60 engine mount coming that I hope to be able to modify to work, or at least use as a basis for making what I need. Worst case I've got enough pieces of 6061 in the shop to be able to mill up a suitable mounting system.

I've got a set of the lower height Mavrik landing gear that will be just right after I make a set of standoffs to get the supports down below the cylinder head, that will necessitate fabricating a new lower canopy mount and I'll need to be a bit creative there to have clearance for the sparkplug lead as well.

No show stoppers that I can see so far, but it won't be a weekend project, this is going to take some time to do it right. Looks like a great winter project at just the right time

Any thoughts about how you will handle the fan and clutch with the
BME engine?

juha , no offense , but the link you posted is to Paul Mecha's web site , he is one of the webs biggest scammers and before anyone throws their money away , they should check out who they would be dealing with , here is an example

Yes, I'm going to try the stock R60 fan and clutch first with some additional shrouding for more airflow around the head made from thin plexi. What sort of issues trying to mix and match parts causes, well, I'll find that out soon enough

I gave a lot of thought to using an R60 as the basis for the project, but the deciding factor was I already have the R50. It would be much easier to deal some of the issues I'm up against using the larger airframe, and may eventually wind up there, for now I'm going forward with the R50 kind of as a proof of concept. If it works out well, I'll leave as-is, if not, there are plenty of used R60's on the market for short $.

Would it be safe to say that a 50 sized gasser would be like flying a 30 sized nitro heli power wise?

If it's using the traditional "weed whacker" type engine, probably. I'm hoping the BME ST90 will at least equal a 60 nitro for performance

I wonder if the BME engine would run my 90 Bergen. The gasser conversion kit for the Bergen alone is 500.00

Rc, could you provide some real world dimensions like the mounting holes for the base, length, width, height, weight.

Thanks

Here you go...

The ST90 isn't recommended for a 90 size heli. I had originally considered buying a Trex 700 to put it in, BME said it wouldn't be powerful enough, but works well in a 60 size.
