My Posts This: Topic Forum | So now the engine size doesn't appear to be a big deal, the engine does fit after some minor modifications to the plastic frame...

There are side benefits to using the Raptor 50, it's easier to get the right gearing for headspeeds up to 1800 or 1900 rpm, the plastic frames are durable and cheap, and parts are readily available. Stock Raptor 30 maingear is 86T, 50 is 85. Either one with an 11 tooth pinion looks to be the most favorable gearing setup and probably what I'll start off with. Figuring the engine is good for 13,000 to 13,500 that puts the max headspeed at right around 1750, perfect for what I plan to do with it, which is to eventually put a scale fuselage on it.
The big issues are going to be the engine mount, landing gear and lower canopy mount, along with throttle linkage. I've got a stock Raptor 60 engine mount coming that I hope to be able to modify to work, or at least use as a basis for making what I need. Worst case I've got enough pieces of 6061 in the shop to be able to mill up a suitable mounting system.
I've got a set of the lower height Mavrik landing gear that will be just right after I make a set of standoffs to get the supports down below the cylinder head, that will necessitate fabricating a new lower canopy mount and I'll need to be a bit creative there to have clearance for the sparkplug lead as well.
No show stoppers that I can see so far, but it won't be a weekend project, this is going to take some time to do it right. Looks like a great winter project at just the right time
