Came late to this topic Great stuff George!!
I worked on a professional version of this for the US NAVY. We were trying to build a 1 inch by 1 inch IMU for missile instrumentation.
Using GPS too. THe project was called JAMI.
I have just got into RC helo's and I have been thinking about this
MEMS based IMU stuff since then. To keep me from crashing. We were going to use it for real time instrumentation of missiles and G loads that will be much higher than the RC helos will see. THe gyro drift was in the 1 degree per minute range and just too much for what we were doing. We used the GPS to give heading updates to the IMUS to correct drift. But the GPS was another issue. (lil itty bittys and update rates)
I did the software that did the real time differential GPS position on our monitors from the telemetry from the missiles.
George if there is anything I can do to help PM me. I havent read the whole thread yet. But guys realize building the smaller IMU is the holy grail of navigation. Its hard to do. many proposed IMUS have fallen through the cracks. Keep it up George!!!
I am just looking for something to help me train till I get good enough to fly by myself.

George, what's the latest on your project? I'm looking at the DJI for the heli but it doesn't support a 4 servo heli and a gimbal. I want your system for the gimbal.

George I may be going back to the Navigation area of work.
Its where we test IMUs rate sensors and accelerometers
Like I said if you need anything let me know.

LOL, yes that's correct. The DJI for the heli and yours for the 3 axis gimbal. Two seperate systems, same machine...unless I'm misunderstanding the use of your system.

Even if it could drive the servos, the DJI cannot stabilise a gimbal which has pan. Only tilt and roll when pointing forwards.

They should stop calling it 'Pan and Tilt'.

@Barry,

You mean that it does not do back compensation for tilt and roll when the mount is looking sideways.

If I remember correctly CARVEC does this compensation.

That's right : tilt and roll pointing straight ahead is the easy part. It gets difficult when the IMU is static but the mount can pan.

The rep should be more open about this : it won't work on any mount with pan - even if you don't connect the pan to the DJI. Once you point it sideways, the pitch and roll stabilisation will be completely wrong.

I saw the algorithms for an airborne laser designator pod and they are mind blowing.

hi all, and respect to you George
I've been following this post since the start but still dont see any reviews on this IMU. Is it out and stabilizing some cameras or what?
Can anyone compare it to the TRIAX CSM made by Derek?
http://www.triax-aerial.com/triax/products.html
We have a modified version of TRIAXlite AV/AP platform, (www.helifoto.hr) and tested it with many gyro/servo/machanics combinations.
I think this is what we need.

there can be only one
