The method you use is probably on Castle Creation speed controllers and I know the guys that worked very hard to get that style of soft start and boy do I wish we had it on the Atom stock ESC for sure.
On the Atom stock ESC the soft start aint so soft.. wouldnt be classified as soft at all but the guys are working on it for sure, so hopefully they fix it soon.
Rak402 and Tradhunt have it right about the only way to get it to soft start is to bring on the throttle slowly at the bottom once spooled up you can add throttle much more quickly. You can also help by making a smaller ramp in the bottom of the throttle curve so that it spools even slower then comes on quickly after the blades are moving.
