| have never setup a helicopter where the swash plate moves up for negative pitch and down for positive. Is this normal on the Avro or have I done something wrong that I am missing?

It all depends on the position of the linkages. I've seen on other helis like the Align series when you flip the blade grips upside down, the wash out arms must be reversed causing the swash to move up for negative pitch and down for positive pitch. It's not an issue; it still works the same. The swash mix simply is reversed.
