JR Heli Vibe - Airskipper - Sylphide - Venture > Tail boom Snapped off in flight - Vibe 50

Wierd thing happened to me this weekend flying my vibe 50... 2nd tank of the day and was doing inverted piro circuits when the tail flew off, sending the model into a high speed piro which thankfully stabilised it enough to land flat on its head and not incur major damage.

Further inspection showed that the boom had broken ahead of the tail gearbox housing. It was not a boom strike, it looks like a fatigue break.

Had over 100 flights with the vibe and its been rock solid. Had one engine cut which resulted in an auto into a nice soft bush a while ago, but it was checked and flown numerous times after that. Engine cut was a result of a worn out check valve on the YS 50, which resulted in a few inconsistent runs (rich - lean - rich again). When it went lean, the headspeed went crazy for maybe a second or two at a time and the whole heli shook vigorously. Wondering if it was this that led to the fatigue that eventually caused the boom to break.

Anyone have anything like this happen before or has any idea what else this could have been caused by?

Tail Boom Snapping off.

Oddly enough we had one here that did the same thing, just infront of the tail box. We found that the tail blades were very much inbalanced and created a high vibration. We changed the boom and the tail blades and no problem since.

Hi,

Unlikely the tail blades on my end coz i am running V blades on the tail. Potentially the tail blade holders? although that said, i haven't had vibration issues on this heli save for the humming at certain RPMs and the couple of times when the engine leaned up (solved with a new check valve).

But yeah, just in front of the tail box is exactly where it broke.

Same issue on my V 50 some months ago!
Luckily I managed to bring the bird down without further damage.

Many many Vibe 50`s seem to suffer from high frequent vibrations.
That minimizes the fun with this generally exceptional flying machine...

Have any of you contacted JR? Personally, ALL of you should, maybe all int he next week. Hopefully with enough pressure they will engineer a fix.

Well, if its high frequency vibes, then i reckon its probably something i did wrong.

But as far as i could tell, i wasn't having (or potentially didn't notice)any vibe issues outside of those few select ones i mentioned earlier. In any case, i am waiting for the relevant parts to arrive to get it up in the air again, i miss flying it already!

The Vibe 50 has to have something wrong in the tail. I'm switching to G-Force tail grips in the hope of fixing an otherwise perfect machine.

Does anybody else notice how that break has a nice spiral to it? Like a split damascus barrel.

Tail boom was like in photos.
The guy who is selling JR in Poland has some friend in JR company. Well i heard that this is impossible to happened The problem was too that the tail blades dissapired. I dont know what was first problem with tail blades or tail boom crash

I have a silly request... you guys that had this tail problem, would you look at the tail pitch slider to see if it is not running out of round on the shaft please. That slider is plastic control harm that treads backward on the bronze bushing. On mine, I found out that it is running a little out of round (I probably cross threaded it a little) and I was wondering what the effect would turn out to be... if the tail blades pitch change back and forth a little + high gain and speed gyro/servo combo = could produce humming noise and boom failure down the road?

Mine is almost ready, will maiden it next week, unless I have to change that slider...

I just maiden my Vibe 50 a week ago, and loving it already.
But the issues with the boom "breaking" away in flight certainly post many questions.
May I know how many flights most of you had on the Vibe before the boom "breaks"?
Thanks.

I don't believe that a tail boom just breaks off without any undelying problem.

high freq vibes due to unbalanced tail rotor, missaligned engine, tail blades etc etc. Something like that will destroy a boom sooner or later. Booms just don't break per se.

Exactly, they aren't just breaking on their own. Something is shaking hard enough to make it happen. I had a killer vibe that I tracked down to a tweaked tail hub, it made the tail case rotate and ripped the hole on the boom longer. If left alone, I guarantee that I would have seen the boom itself fail, but I tracked it down and replaced the boom before it broke.
