the hitecs are a direct fit with no mods,if I was 100% sure the futaba were the same I'd get some, but the hitecs work great, are cheap and a direct drop in,its hard to mess with that combination, the 550 is all futaba if that matters

and no I have not given in to the hs65mg craze

Didn't work on mine. I helped Padawan reassemble his busted BeltCP. I gave him my spare Trueblood dampeners and batman tail blades.

We re-geared a stripped HS56; replaced a spindle, main shaft, and flybar; replaced the main gear and tail boom; replaced the HS50 tail servo (he needs at least an HS81 or better); and replaced the short pitch links that were too tight. We got the swash nice and level with the Trueblood leveler.

It got too late (for him) so we didn't get a chance to fully set the head back up. That's a task for next time.

I don't have an e550 (not yet) but I'm following your progress somewhat. Why did you look to turn off the gov mode in the ACE ESC? Also, what is "reprogrammed for futaba"?

Mike,

What changes did you make to the pitch curve. Were you using an S curve or something crazy like that? Or was this a "normal mode" tuning thing?

Normal mode.

I had a "spike " in my curve ; so I'm hovering and with a "Stocky" .005" stick movement, I'm dropping.

By straightening that line, it's not so freaken sensitive.

Well Mike, theres another cure for that. But to be honest, I haven't been in idle-up with the T500 yet.

What does idle-up have to do with anything?

And yes I worked on the Protos today. I finally got my update pack installed and the heli back together.

Well Chris, Mike tweaked his normal throttle curve. But if you use idle-up its a nice straight curve from -10 to +10.

I did more tuning on the T500. The tail was still to slow with rudder at 150% and the gyro set for 150%. Tonight I also cranked the dual rates on the rudder channel to max (125%) and finally had too much response from the tail. Backing the dual rate off to 115% gave me a good balance. The tail response was now like I wanted it but now it was a little too twitchy in the center. I first tried +10 expo, but that wasn't the right mix of stability and responsiveness. Next I used the Spartan software to reduce the accelleration profile 3 notches and that did that trick with no expo.

I also reduced the decelleration profile 3 notches because stopping from a piro was more aggressive than I need. Not bouncy at all, but VERY abrupt. High decelleration rates are harder on the belt, so since I don't need it, I turned it down.

Now I see how a proper tail behaves and it confirms my continued dissatifaction with the HBK2 tail. Can't wait to try the HBK3 tail setup and a better servo. Hoping for some improvement. Oh yah, this is with this 43t pulley.

Idle-up is just another curve. There is no fixed way to set it up. Maybe you feel it is a linear -10,0,10 but other may think different. So using the term idle-up as a solution to a problem is misleading.

Missleading? You been playing with S curves there Chris? I'd say 99% of most pilots are running thier idle-up pitch curve linear. I know the Outrage guys use an S curve to make it feel more like a Trex, go figure.

I love idle up. Except when I crash, which has been mercifully rare lately.

I love seeing people unconsciously take a step or two back when I flip theswitch before lift-off. That turbine-esque whine is like sweet music to my ears. The little bouncy pitch-pumps just don't seem as sharp in normal mode.

Plus, if I flew in normal mode, I'd land in normal mode. The way I do it, I always hit throttle hold a foot or three off the deck to land. Good practice, and it keeps me aware of where the switch is in case of mishap.
