Hi #55,

I love your enthusiasm!! Jets are the best I too have a pure thrust jet, Wren WM54 in an Eagle 5 visible in my gallery. Haven't flown it yet but am expecting no issues.

What made you jump as you disconnected some plumbing during start-up? Did you get shocked by the ignitor or something? With RAM out of business, are you concerned about the servicing of your engine?

A suggestion: Please, get some hearing protection on your head and for the person running the camera. Those turbines make some high-level noise that really wrecks ears.

Enjoy!

^^^ I have already spent HOURS looking at the "backyard jets" videos!

everything from the two turbo-chargers put together--- too the two old guys with a HUGE RR engine (out of a jet )

I LOVE turbine engines all together! I have done a lot of studying about em... on my own...and of course as a 60 pilot, I know the GE 700, and GE 701C inside and out

ya---- I jumped because I disconnected the air line with the air toggle switch still in the ON position.

( don't ask why I disconnected it---- since I just had to hook it back up for shutdown/cool-down.....I'm New!!! )

If you like the "back yard" turbo-turbines, look deep down through my gallery for the one a friend built 9 years ago. Complete with functional afterburner! Ah heck, here's a picture

Get it on!!! Looks like you're quite a tinkerer, 55. You've got to be loving it! If I could get into a turbine right now I would. There is so much to learn and I love being absorbed in something new and interesting- that's what this is all about!
Good luck with your project- let us know what you have planned for it.

HHC, that's an awesome picture.

Thank you, thank you (takes a bow...)

One of these years I'll upload the videos of the running and testing. I currently own this rig and would love to experiment further with liquid fuel vs the propane as seen in the picture. Propane works very well, gave perfectly reliable and quick throttle response but is consumed at an enormous rate. Over-chilling of the supply tank, and consequently the loss of fuel pressure, necessitated constructing a fuel vaporizer that allowed liquid propane to leave the afterburner supply tank and then enter the afterburner chamber as a gas - lots of it! Hot water from the water heater was fed into the vaporizer to gassify the propane. Going with diesel or kerosene sure helps eliminate the supply issues but adds others. One year...

Meltdowns come in many 'flavors' and are mostly safe. When the turbine wheel in a turbocharger overtemps, it starts throwing little bits of molten metal out the tail pipe (sparks) and the engine slows down. So you add more fuel to compensate which make more heat. Eventually there's not enough wheel left to drive the compressor and all is left is a big flame out the end. Game over. Figure out what you did wrong, rebuild and don't make the same mistake again.

Overspeeding the turbine is the most dangerous risk as it can come appart with devastating results. Watch the tach closely and respect the EGT vs tip speed of the wheels and you'll be okay. I could show you a video of one coming apart but I'd need to ask permission of the video owner first. Makes quite a "BANG!" when it lets go And to think I was driving that very same turbo-turbine gokart before it popped!

Do a youtube.com search for "Krugtech" and you'll see video of the gokart after it was rebuilt and many other projects constructed by the guy that built the turbine in my picture.

Enjoy!
