Tandem Rotor Helis Vertol Chinook > Front Shaft Slipping!!!! NEW SOLUTION...

Well, I thought I had found the solution to the from main dropping down by adding another mast collar above the lower bearing along with the upper lock.... well it moved again!!!!!
When I took a good look the main gear had moved down and the mast lock above the lower bearing had actually worked the bearing almost out of the bearing holder....meaning the shaft had moved down about 3/8".... and I was wondering why it kept sticking it's nose up while attempting to fly....
The new solution that we/the "gang", came up with at the Southern Heli Challenge...(if you are into SCALE, you want to attend this one!!!)
Check that ALL is where it belongs and that the ms is completely in the proper location... then with the set screw out of the top mast collar, mark the center of the hole on the shaft.... then center punch it and remove the shaft.... drill/mill a "dimple" into the main shaft at your mark.... then reinstall everything....and when you go to install the mast lock, make certain that you align the set screw with the dimple and run it in slowly until you feel the collar and set screw align and it goes into the dimple....(don't forget the loctite!!!)
And ONLY USE THE ONE SET SCREW into the dimple, leave the other side out.... and you can leave the second/lower mast lock off, it will not be needed.....
I hope this message gets to you before you need to replace another main gear!!!!!!
So far this looks like the best solution yet and I don't think I will have another problem in this area....
Good Luck, Stan

I used pointed set screws and put a drop of loctite 680 between the collar and the shaft, I'll have to cut it off to remove it!! (most likely just a little heat will do it but the stuff is tough) With loctite 680 I don't think set screws are even required! I have used it in many Industrial repair applications in which years later worn, spun, poor fitting shaft journals that were planned for future repair are still in place working fine, and these are machines that run 24/7 and take a constant pounding. Loctite makes many products and used in the right applications on cleaned components have performed miracles for me in my professional occupation. You can even try loctite 620 which is a wicking grade of thread lock that can be applied to an already put together set up such as between the collar and shaft and it holds great, just be careful around bearings as it will wick right into them too if too much is used and lock them right up, right through the grease and oil!!!

I put my two collars on with a small drop of Green Locktite and it seems to be holding fine! But, I still check for up and down play in my front shaft before ever flight, just to make sure! If it ever does slip again, I will do as Stan suggested and drill a little dimple in the shaft for the set screw! It sounds like a great idea!

Update!!!!!

Well, I have flown the machine at least 2 dozen flights since this "little" fix and the problem seems to be GONE COMPLETLY!!!!! And that is a BIG PLUS.... the heli is really dialed in now and I can cruise around comfortably with it..... I am LIKING that!!!!!

Oh and where did everyone go!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not winter yet!!!!!!

Taking a Break

No doubt I need one, between work and home it's getting hard to tell the difference lately. This is a project I have put off for 2 years and it ain't going away so I figured get it done already then back into helies in the spring. After this one I know Santa (me) is going to get me some thing GREAT for Christmas for being such a good boy this year, and the wife will not be able to say any thing about it in front of the kids or ever for that matter!! God it's great knowing Santa personally!!

Glad to hear your twin is flying well, I still need to spring for a Helicommand ridgid as forward flight with mine should not be as much work as it seems to be, but that comes in a little smaller box then I am planning to ask Santa for this year!!!!!!!!! (like turbine or electric Vario 222)

My Hirobo CH-47 cost me a new kitchen, master bath, hallway and master bedroom remodel. I hate to guess what a Vario turbine Sky Crane is going to set me back. Maybe Christmas 2020 if I'm still on the right side of the grass.

Cheers, Doug

Weather WAS GREAT!!

Yes, the weather was perfect, sunny, 65, dead calm, couldn't resist putting the hammer down and doing some stick time, even if was just in the front yard. Vertol LOVES the calm, flew, then back to chores while batteries recharged, ended up doing 3 cycles, got lots of work done, and FUN too, PURE HEAVEN.

THANKS for the push, I needed it!!
