e-Thunder Tiger Raptor E Series > E550 Tail "twitch" help

Hey guys.

I'm trying to figure out a problem with my E550. After getting it "tweaked" for mild 3d by upping the HS, increasing pos and neg pitch etc. the heli has developed a "twitch" about 4 minutes into an 8-9 min flight.

It not constant but happens once about every 5-20 seconds no matter if I'm cruising forward or entering/exiting a turn.

It's not the gyro gain as it's way down (and wasn't twitching before).

Here's the specs:

- Tonic-X 1110kv brushless
- CC Phoenix 85 HV ESC
- CC BEC 10A switching regulator
- Futaba 9257 tail servo
- Futaba GY401 gyro
- (3) Fut 9252 digital servos on cyclic
- Spectrum AR7000 RX

Again, it flies great for 3-4 minutes and then the tail twitching starts.

Any ideas???

The guys at RCgroups figured out that sometimes the break interferes with the governor with the new beta software. Go to the airplane mode and set the break strength to 0. Then save the settings to the ESC. Now go back and set the Set RPM governor mode and set the governor gain in the 2 to 7 range (start with 2 and increase one at a time) and see if that solves the problem. That 1110 Kv motor is going to require a very low governor gain.

Thanks Ben.

The thing is, I don't have governor set up on the CC ESC and I'm also running the older software ver.

I do plan to update the software but was waiting until any/all bugs in the beta version to be taken care of.

Since I'm not running governor, do you have any other ideas? I've been told there's a good chance it's static build up on the tail. I was going to try running a ground wire from the boom to the motor mount and if that doesn't help add another wire from the motor mount to the neg battery lead.

Ground wires do help with static discharge problems. Check the belt and make sure it does not have an extra twist.

Thanks again Ben.

I grounded the boom to the motor mount but doing a continuity test, the motor mount doesn't appear to be grounded itself. I guess I will have to run a wire from the mount to the neg battery lead.

Also, I did lower my headspeed slightly and it did seem to decrease the twitch. It must have something to do with the headspeed and/or static but I'm still not 100%.

Try another set of battery. Some batteries cannot hold voltage and that can cause the tail to twitch too.

Thanks Rchover.

I'm using top of the line 6s 5300mAh revolectrix packs from Cell Pro/FMA direct. All 3 of my packs deliver the same performance.

Since I've flown another 3 packs with the lower headspeed it is apparent that lowering it has helped decrease the frequency of tail twitches.

I'm fairly certain that it's either the ESC (problem or wrong setting) or static but I'm not sure that lowering the HS the small amount I did would actually decrease static so I'm leaning towards ESC setting or malfunction.

You need to call CC tech support and they will fix you up. They have very good tech support on the telephone but not e-mail.

Thanks Ben.

I'm corresponding with Joe F. from CC via email now. I've not had a bad experience ref email with them yet and Joe was a local guy here so I guess that helps. If need be I can and will call direct.

I'll keep you posted.

Just update... my small tail twitch is gone. It took a while to get off my butt and fix it the correct way since I've been flying my Logo 500 this season.

The fix (in my case anyway) was to drill a small hole in the bottom of the boom near the frame and attach the ground wire to a terminal screwed into the boom. That, plus I did the static guard spray to my belt.

So far in about 12 flights... no twitch.
