My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Not to change the subject.. but. Does anyone have access to Boeing CH47 dimensioned drawings? Specifically the Door 1R rescue winch showing details other than a blob hanging outside. A good set of prints showing STA, WL & BL locations would be good. I have some Emails into Boeing Virtol but not holding my breath on those.

What sort of flight times are you folks getting with the electric conversion? What voltage and capacity battery are you using?

Every heli I have is now electric powered. I am used to 14 to 18 minute flights depending on the helicopter (2 bladed, 3 or 4 bladed) and weight (16 to 36 pounds). I am just wondering what typical flight times are for a typical configuration with this model?

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I initially tried to run 2 4s lipos with approx 2000 mah however, the flight times were minimal before voltage cutoff.

I have since upgraded to 2 4s 3750's as this seems to be roughly the consensus in the posts on the Chinook E-conversion here on RR.

Out of curiosity, Helitronix, what is the helicopter that you have that weighs 36 pounds and runs on electric. I've got to see a picture of that.

The large electric machine is the Vario Lama, which is 8 feet long. It's just a few inches smaller than the turbine version. For some reason, the tail boom is shorter by one section of tubing compared with the turbine fuselage. Go figure.

I power the beast with 4X6S1P 5350mAh LiPos, configuring it as a total of 12S2P at 10,700mAh. I'm using an AXI 5345/14, turning 930RPM at the head, and I get 14 minutes with this setup. It uses a 3-bladed head with 875mm blades, and has a 3-bladed tail. With all the goodies added, and some lead weight to simulate the rest of the goodies to BE added, it comes in at 36 pounds. At 25 pounds, it flew with an Actro 32-4 motor very comfortably. At 36 pounds, the Actro gets too hot and lets the magic smoke out. Best not to do that.

I'll try to remember to dig up some photos. It's flying, but all the cosmetic work needs to be done to it. At the rate I'm going, that might happen within the next 3 years.

Now that I have converted my Chinook to Electric after two to three years of getting nitro/oil all over it, I am very tempted to try to convert one of my larger gassers to electric as it is just a much simpler means of power to deal with. The lack of noise and mess is really something in these scale helicopters.

My two larger scale birds are the Vario R-22 and the Cobra (in my gallery) but I fear the cost for electric conversion and batteries would be prohibitive.

The cost for the Chinook conversion was very reasonable and the only stumbling block was getting a motor mount which Turbinator was able to make for several of us. The rest you just buy off the shelf.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		FYI - The mechanics in my Lama are the same R-22 mechanics that you have.

Darrell Sprayberry made me a motor mount. The motor itself was $240. The speed controller was on the order of $350 (Power Jazz), and the batteries were close to $900. It does add to the expense, but I keep finding that it's worth it. Plus, you can share your batteries with other helicopters to help spread the cost out. I'll be using the same batteries in my Air Crane... If you didn't mind swapping ESCs, you could save money there, too. I find that i'd rather leave the ESC in the model because it is convenient, but given the price of these things, maybe it's worth the hassle to swap a few wires now and then?
