Scale Model RC Helicopters > EC135 Build - San Diego

This project has been in the works for 2-years. Mostly waiting for me to find the time. I'm the 3rd owner and this is my first attempt at scale helicopter. Gear: Vario 2-bolt/4-blade head, Helitronix mixer with CSM180 on elev, VOG 10-blade fenestron, G230RC (electric start not installed)

The end result: D-HMFR

Mechanics have been pulled for trainer pob/boom configuration. Have 2-gallons of 100ft football field size figure 8's since figuring out my benzin setup problem. The head takes some time to get it down, but gets better with every flight.

The starting point

First install of electronics

Discovered fenstron wasn't center so the choice was made to try and fix. Added wood reinforcement for the fenstron Air Flow Rectifier mounting screws.

Tail ready for assemble

The fan housing reinstalled.

I started detailing the tail section first. I really like the fenstron tail rotor. Then the fabrication begins.

After working on tail and boom section its on to upper cowl. This was fun. The two piece cowl was glass/epoxied together then recut. The forward half was glassed to fuselage as per full size. The mechanics slide in just right after a few practice runs. Then it on to latches, vents, etc. The only thing not scratch builts are the latches.

Current work (June/July 08) has been the first sliding door and misc. detailing. The door required a number of designs. Still reworking and awaiting different parts.

Some of the nose detail

New vent louvers before and after molding.

This part had me on the fence for a while, then the method to create hit me. Final design is made with styrene.

The hardest part I'm finding with creating parts is the "How To". Once that is determined its just time and patience.

PM sent.

You'll need various tools for cutting/shaping.

This weekend was supposed to be set aside for the installation of the remaining door tracks. Instead - removed the 1st middle track to redo, and added unplanned detail to fuselage.

Got two flights in on the Vario 4-blade mechanics. One was nothing but buzzing the field. The ole drop in just past the trees, skim the deck between 5 - 10ft, then pop-up to miss building, gradual climb to 100+ feet, turn, line-up, do it again, but this time instead of going over building, bank-turn and climb out then repeat. I would just fly off into the horizon then turn around.

There are times when you really feel locked into it, and you just fly.
