This thread inspired me to call MA and find out a little more.
Should address a few questions I have read above.

-The new 90 is about 1 pound lighter then the stratus (depending on electronics, battery etc. of course)
-A few neat things about the engine/removal and such I am not sure is ok to talk about?
-It has the fewest parts ever on a MA machine
-As "Nitro Fun" mentioned... no dial indicating. No collets.
-Through testing thus far, the machine is stupid fast in the air
-The 50 and 90 will be out around the same time frame. Possibly 2 months from now.

Now please.... this was in casual discussion and as you all know things may change (especially the release date).

You may also want to know the reason the 50 has not been released is due to the extreme proto testing/fixing/changing to make it the best it can possibly be. The question of why it takes MA such a long time to bring any new product to the public comes up a lot. I think we may all assume that was the reason but it sure was nice to hear it from the company.

It's nice to know they are looking out for our/your best interest and are trying to make the best possible product they can. Very reassuring.

Do they have a name for it yet? What about price? It has fewer parts yes, but will it be cheaper to own than a Stratus?

Is it too much to hope that the individual prices will be cheaper than we've seen in the past?! Not holding my breath on this one though.

A stratus isn't that much more expensive to own than any other 90 out there. What's the most expensive parts? Frames and carbon booms. The other major majufacturers aren't much if at all cheaper than M/A. I'm not going to throw out the "you get what you pay for" either. But when you are looking at a $1000 airframe. The difference in a $15 mainshaft and $18 is neglegable. If it's not neglegable damage to the wallet. Ya might want to think about buying a .50.

Everyone is waiting for the .90 that costs $500 that you can wad up and fix for $100 and it's never going to happen. EVER! I have owned numerous .90's and none are cheap to crash. In my experience (limited as it may be as compared to some) a .90 crash costs about $400 every time. To get it back to a new status. Not bandaged up like a salvage title honda civic at the Tijuanna swap meet.

shawgl, I hear and get what you're saying, but I can still hope and dream. With currently technology, it's never going to happen. But I have hopes that one day it will as technology improves. Time will tell.

Quantum,

I am actually surprised the prices haven't gone up. I started in this hobby in 2003 and bought my first .90 which was a Vigor CS .91. The first time I piled it in it cost me about $400. I crashed my Extreme. Cost almost the same amount. Crashed the hell out of my Voyager 50 a couple times and it cost me.... You guessed it. About $350. Here we are five years later and the price for a JR mainshaft is just about unchanged. Same goes for M/A and all the other guys too. As the parts count go down there is going to be less stuff to damage so the crash prices may come down a little but I wouldn't expect it to be much. Carbon frames are still going to be about $75 and Canopies about $65 and so on for the normal crash parts. They just don't change. Hence me sticking with my trusty Fury Extreme where a frame is $35 and the canopy still runs $65. Save where you can if you need too.

Crash costs will stay about the same on all sizes of heli's. The major expense is the blades. People fail to take this into consideration.

Ugg, I hope they just get the 50 out the door. I am already quite happy with my 90 but my 50 is turning into a sloppy red headed stepchild that I don't want to sink a dime into at this point.

I agree with the blades $$$.

I have come to bank on some things when you crash. I'm talking about a crash, not a oh I almost saved it and leveled the wings. I'm talking it hits the ground under power and with some velocity. Not always the case but that is what a crash is to me.

Blades
one frame side (plan for the worst)
at least one servo (plan for the worst)
T/B and TQ tube, control tube, and supports
Mast, spindle, and flybar
at least 5 links
tail shaft and hub
Canopy
And the ever expensive bevel gear.

No matter what 90 you own if you tally up the costs to replace those parts with like items ie. carbon for carbon, aluminum for aluminum the price difference is minimal.

Shawgl, we are in total agreement with the crash costs. Even with a cheap boom $20 bucks for a Fury metal vs 16 for two Trex 60 size when you factor in blades crash costs from a cheaper to fix 50 to a 90 are going to be relatively the same.

In God we trust all others must pay cash.

I agree. It's not that bad for the enjoyment. Just enjoy the hobby and keep it out of the dirt and all is well right? I look at the price of a crash as incentive to not trailer park yardsale your heli all over your field on a regular basis.

One thing i will say about a Stratus is that the frames almost always hold up. I had 2 Stratus with a few crashes each and never broke the frames. A month or so ago I saw a T-rex 700 and Stratus midair and the Stratus Frames still held up, while the 700's did not.

I think all the M/A heli's are strong. And I'm not saying any of the others are weak. Don't get me wrong, I have only broke a couple frames in my time in the hobby. It's not often but the list I posted I think is a pretty reasonable cross section of parts to compare crash costs on any give heli's. And all the heli's you will compare have those parts. You can get a good idea of what it's going to cost you when you finally do wad it up.

The only time I have broken the frames is when the battery came loose at full throttle in a Piro. Not a pretty site. However, repair cost was only 100 bucks more than a normal crash less blades.

Right, Price for a frame side on a Stratus? It about makes up that diference. Me, my frame breaking came from it going in pretty pronounce nose first, right side low. Plowed the front corner really bad and thrashed the right side frame. The point I was trying to make is most kits if you compare part for part, of the same material they are not that much different in price. Hence, people that say a M/A is costs so much more than other kits and vice versa just don't take the time to compare. It's not a big difference at all.
