I just plugged in an extra battery after a successful flight and the rotor started slowly spinning and the esc started severely smoking. I reconnected it again and it works great? I saw another post about this happening and wanted to warn everyone. Throttle was down all the way, and I am very familiar with electrics, but I can't explain this one. I am going to call Century tommorrow and alert them. Any similar incidents post here and I'll let them know.

Hi,

yeah similar experience with FEDA (identical esc) except mine cut engine afterwards whilst at 20ft - dropped like a stone!!

Completely dead now.....it did used to have the occasional cut out whilts in fwd flight just above half throttle, the second one has already started doing this (Is this a low battery warning signal??).

Using KOKAM 1020 2cell lipols.

feda and Hummingbird ESC

The ESC software programming is not the same in these two, that is why you occasionally get engine shut-downs on the Feda controller.

How long are you running current through these ESC's with the kokam cells. (could they start running too hot ???)

Careful!!

If you let too much smoke escape from the ESC, it will quit working!

ESC's

Hi,

the ESC usually never gets hot, just one occasion (with the smoke!) I'm actually getting pretty crud run times out of my Kokams (8-10mins and thats easing back on the throttle whilst doing laps and figure of 8 's in the field- not usually the weather for it in UK so have been lucky!!!), I think my charger isn't doing its job properly.......

The engine cutting out bit is driving me insane....never does it at full wack or low rpm...its just at "cruising" throttle.....nightmare!

Electronic Speed Cooking (ESC)

From the description of the problem I can come up with an explanation but one you will not like to hear...
A standard DC ESC uses a FET transistor (kind of an electronic high speed switch) to pulse power into the motor. The pulse rate is high and the motor speed is adjusted by what is called "duty cycle" which is the rate of the pulse ON time to the entire pulse width. This switch must be operated fully on or fully off. At those two extreems, the switching element does not get hot as no energy is dissipated in it. If the switch is allowed to work half way between ON and OFF, it develops heat due to the power consumption which is the result of the voltage drop (non zero) and current (non zero as well). The motor will spin slowly (current is low in motor terms) but the ESC will heat up severely and puff smoke from the FET. If quickly terminated, it can be saved. Otherwise the FET will burn and break the circuit. The controller chip must not allow the FET to reach this state, however, during startup period, the controller might get stuck in such a way that the drive to the FET is halfway.
Moral of the story - throw that ESC away and buy a decent one (Castle, Jeti, and others). It might be a life saver.

esc

JF,

As mentioned earlier. The Century CNE052 ($39.95) from the Hummingbird does not suffer the "shut down" problems of the one in the Feda. Give it a try.
