YES! Just realize they are a secondary insurance.. You get what most feel is a worthless mag.. It is getting better this (SIG) is being better represented each year in the mag. You cant attend any sanctioned events (funflys) without it. Pretty much the only reason I kep AMA is because its mandatory to attend FunFly's and I love going and flying at as many as I can possibly attend.. Its 60 bucks a year give it a shot. I have needed the AMA twice in the lst seven years and they have responded in a very positive manner. I have also seen an abuse of power from the same guy.. its a mixed bag of nuts but until I willing and able to get involved and make a difference it is what it is..

Joining AMA

Johnnybv,
Joining AMA not only offers insurance but many other great benefits and opportunities to us modelers.
I believe the GREATEST BENEFIT offered by the "Academy of Model Aeronautics " is the fact that they represent and defend our hobby/sport on the national, state and local level.
If you have an opportunity check out THEIR/OUR web site
[url=http://modelaircraft.org]
In particular, read the AMA's mission statement. I believe you will agree.
So I would ask you to seriously consider joining this fine organization.
Regards
AMA #690057

here when wanted; there when needed; everywhere when looked for

If you have your own land, or is around some open field then you don't need it. If you want to fly at any funfly, they pretty much all require it. I fly on military training areas that are not in use, so I never really needed the AMA.

So in short, if you want to go to funflys or is in a area limited with open spaces, join it, then join a club (cost extra). If your lucky and is around open areas (like me) then you don't need it.

Yes, and for the reasons listed above, and not because of their silly magazine that has now degenerated into a forum for literary "know-it-alls" to demonstrate their point of view.

What the AMA does is lobby for the portion of the RF spectrum that we need to fly without problems not due to RF interference and to advocate that no matter what power hungry idiot politician says we are neither a threat to national security, nor a threat to the public's safety no matter what dumb stunts are performed on occasion, lest those said idiot's try to enact absurd laws that WILL have a negative impact on our hobby.

Life with out AMA?

Johnny;
Even if you never hurt youself,never lose a heli to theft or never damage your own property with your heli consider this, There are too many reasons to list that can result is loss of control on an RC helicopter.
Your next flight could result in injury to another person,or death!
Your heli might crash into someones car (an expensive car) or crash into someones home.
You've seen the articles in the news where jurys award rediculous amounts to "victims" of accidents.
I don't know about you but I could not afford to pay off any of those awards with out AMA.
Screw the magazine; Junkpilot

When you fly JUNK it's hard to tell when you've crashed!

What do you need the AMA for --I just tape some poor saps name and address that I grabbed from the phone book to the inside of my heli. Then when you crash into someone's property, you just haul out of there and the blame gets put on the guys whos name is in the heli. No hastles.

--I'm just being stupid. Of course you should get AMA --In fact, it should be a requirement. I would not fly unless you have it. I think they do a fine job of the mag. In fact, I prefer it over my "park flyer" mag that keeps getting thinner and thinner and thinner.

Is it true that AMA only covers you if you are flying on an AMA field

no...best thing to do is go to their web site and read.

the magazine does have good tips that can be found in any related internet forum for that matter...just like any other magazine.

maa44646, WRONG! AMA will cover you anywhere as long as you are following the safety rules, if you don't have homeowners insurance it is primary!!, you need to go to the AMA website and get the real information before you spout off about something you know NOTHING about.

777ER, Yes you can request any AMA number, if it is available and not an Acronym for something PG-13, i think there is a small charge for this, as a life member i picked my favorite logon. Ron

Please cancel my clearance, I have the field in sight.
