It Flies! (kinda)

Got my ToysRus Hughes 500 in the air today and all the tt39 engine will do is allow it to hover, barely. So I think the next thing to do is tear it all apart and install the tt50 motor I have and see if that will work. Did try some 600mm blades on it, but that just made it worse, however that did tell me that the 600's will fit ok. Just need to make sure of no hard landings!!!...................Dave

Crownvic, I dont know if it will help but try to tach your Hughes and make sure its always spinning around 1550-1600 RPM. I did this to mine and actually had to back the collective back on the top end because my OS 32 couldnt pull a full 9 degrees with all that weight. After I did this it flew great! It doesnt climb out like crazy, probably about two feet per second straight vertical, but it flies very scale. As close as we live we need to keep in touch, Id love to see that new Ranger of yours.

Hey Guys

I have one of those Hughes 500 Rescue choppers too. I bought it at Toys r us also. Maybe a year ago..... was about $ 60.00

Going to attempt to install a raptor 30 in it.

It was going to be my winter project but my Century 60 size Airwolf got top priority!

Anyways, I'm wondering whats the best way to remove the excess plastic ? grinder? sander? Hot knife? This stuff is hard as a brick and I have a vast amount of tools, but can't figure out the cleanest most effective way to remove the unwanted stuff....??

Any ideas ?

I use a Dremel with about an 80 grit sanding wheel, works like a charm.

Hey all! Got my ToysRus hughes flying today with the tt50 motor. Man what a difference over the tt39. One can actually fly this thing around instead of just hovering and being afraid to do anything!! If you guys are thinking on doing this scale project, then I would seriously consider the 50 size motor as the engine of choice. Dont waste your time on a smaller engine. You will probably just want to upgrade soon!! Will try to get some pics soon and also want to get this thing weighed.............Dave

That looks great. the tailboom is not warped out of line and it sits right. excellent work. I have a Hawk sport and a FEW of these 500 bodies sitting around. I'll have to think about this one...

Thanks for the comments, guys!!!

Victor55, I have 600's on there. Its close but I think it will work fine.

Heli143, I did a lot of rework on the boom to get that angle. As it sits there, I have about a quarter inch of clearance between the windshield and the aileron servo. I wish I could find someone to vaccuum form another (thinner) windshield.

Firehawk, us guys usually get together Wednesday eve. at Chatfield. If you come let me know so I can bring the 500.................Dave

I need suggestions:

1. How did you guys mount the machanics to the body. did you have to build up some stand offs or were you able to bolt it straight to it?

2. how did you reinforce your langing gear and how much reinforcement is nessary?

pictures if you have them would help alot.

Thanks,
Glyrenden

glyrenden, here is a pic of my beefed up landing gear.....I retained the stock struts but added quarter inch steel brake line brazed together and bolted to the original mount holes.

For the mechanics mounts I made some sheet metal brackets which bolt to the floor and then to the mechs. The front (on mine) is raised about three quarters of an inch. The rear is raised about three eights of an inch. There are probably a thousand different ways to do what I have done, but these seemed to be the most logical. Hope this helps. Check out my gallery...................Dave
