Of course I don't know what camera he used, but some camera types, even still image, can get awfully expensive in a hurry.
You can get a Hasselblad digital back for medium-format cameras (just the back, sans the camera!) from B&H Photovideo for US$38,000. Available online here:

Add the camera and a few lenses... you could probably buy a house with that much money.
