Hi all

After a hard landing ( very hard ), due to a low battery,
I decided to try out Raja`s little Jewel genarator,
the only regret I have now... why did I not put that one on, before.

When you can se the "volt checker" saying, battery full, keep
flying, every time you land for a refuel, you`ll know it`s
worth it, for sure.
Thanks for making that option Raja, it really keep`s peace in mind

Very nice!

Worthy of its 4oz weight, so rightfully called the "Jewel"!

I am really, really thinking about buying a jewel generator for my Predator Condor, but I want to fly it just a little to make sure I like it and want to keep it. I do have a question for Raja, on the instructions for putting the generator on the predator, it assumes that the torrington bearing has been reversed. First question is why does it need to be reversed and second, how do you tell if it is reversed?

Thanks,

Reversing the torrington bearing

Basically its setup stock so that you crank the motor with an electric start and once the motor starts the motor doesn't turn the shaft.

By reversing the torrington bearing in the clutch, it will allow the gas motor to constantly drive the generator motor while running. If you don't do it then the generator won't spin in flight under load and the Jewel system cannot power your heli / charge the flight pack.

How do you tell? If you cannot turn the gas motor over with the electric start, (spins freely) then its reversed. Chances are yours isn't unless someone specifically did it to install a Jewel in the past.

Hope this helps.

Wow, after you explained it, it all seems so simple and makes perfect sense. Thanks for the great info once again.

Thats pretty cool, I use LiIon batteries, so I can run for weeks on a charge, thus no need to put on one of those... but I like that generator, thats a good idea.

Hi Fixit

"You should never be without one when you own a gasser"

I have allways had one, let`s just say that I misjudged it`s
value, when I was stirring the sticks and it told me that
I had power enough for one more fligth
That was an expensive lesson.

Copied from Jewel's website:
"Charging current decreases to 0 amps when battery reaches 5.4v. Can be modified to supply additional output of 11.3v for AP rigs."
Can the charging system be modified for 6.6-7.2v output? Just curious since I run 2s2p A123's.

I don't think I will ever run out of battery in a single day, but batteries do fail and I can see it as having good Insurance!

Can it be modified?

Sure, it can give any output, but a 2S battery pack is really 8.4v charged so you'd want an 8.4v output. But then 8.4v is too much for the receiver and servos, so now your double regulating back down to 5.x volts to run the radio and servos. Hence why I like to keep it simple and regulate it to the right voltage to begin with and cut out the secondary regulator.

A bigger battery will surely make for longer flight times, but you still have to charge it and maintain it. With a Jewel you're running on it so to speak, and charging the backup battery while you fly which can be a cheap low weight battery for less than $20. Another thought its like your car, do you charge it before you go? Just jump in and go - maybe check the gas level. Same goes here, you can grab your heli at any time any day with no notice and go fly - not worrying about if you charged or not...

2s A123's top off at 7.2v or 3.6v per cell. They drop quickly to 3.3v per cell and stay there for about 90% of the discharge. You must be thinking Lipo @ 8.4 volts.

So if your system can give any output, is the regulator easily adjusted to 7.2v output? I am running a 6v system and only regulating the gyro and tail servo to 5.4v. My reciever, throttle and cyclic servos are all good @ 7.2v running unregulated straight off the A123 cells. I want to keep the 6.6-7.2v to my reciever. Maybe I should have been more specific in my original post.

In a word yes

Any voltage can be had but its not user adjustable just assembled that way with the right resistor values to do it.

Ok...So do you sell a generator kit that is designed to work with a 6.0v system?

That`s because we are talking about a modified super torqe

Just to clear this up, the AXI will provide the power but the pull start will start the engine

Dan, I didn’t want to give up the use of the start shaft by reversing the Torrington clutch so I mounted my jewel here. It just seems natural to mount the generator on the motor shaft although it has no generating advantage.

I want to keep the 6.6-7.2v to my reciever.
The regulator is fixed. Using a variable regulator is only going to add circuitry that most people don’t need. If you want 7.2 V or what ever use a 7.2 regulator after the bridge rectifier. The voltage that the motor puts out is far above 7.2 in operation that’s why you can regulate it for a 12V system.
