After a re-build following a 'botched' auto last Sunday due to a decaying head speed the 'Sacrificial Gear' was replaced (as seems to be the norm on this model!).

Today after a gentle 1st flight to make sure everything was put back together correctly, a 540 stall turn was executed (surprisingly accurate!) but a strange 'clicking noise' caused me to land immediately to check it out further. I found that the gear recently replaced had teeth missing in five different points and the metal tail gear was jumping over the faulty bits.
The gear I replaced last week had only one place where the teeth were gone as this must have been where the metal gear was meshed on impact.

I'm not too impressed at this point as these bits are £20 a throw. There doesn't seem to be any adjustment of the meshing so I don't yet know whether it was a faulty part I bought or if there is something else I am missing.

Anyone got any advice??

Cheers
Richard.

Be glad you don't have a Vigor CS. Our Bevel gears are $48 a pop.

On the CS, if the gear mesh is not PERFECT, (still trying to get the definition of perfect), you'll wear/strip the gear out in the first couple of flights. JR says that tighter mesh is better, but on the CS the tolerance is VERY close. ITs either too tight, or too loose. You get a fraction of a MM to get it right, and the boom tightened down to keep it.

I'm not familiar with the mechanics on the Futura, but it sounds like the same type of problem. I've found on the CS that a piece of aluminum foil mashed between the gears sets the best mesh so far.

You could have also gotten a warped gear. Setting a proper mesh on the high spot would strip out the teeth on the lower spots as it rotates.

Hope this helps abit.

Loosen the bolts that hold the pinion gear bearing block, and tap the bearing block downward. There is a tiny bit of "adjustment" available here. Press the block downward firmly as you tighten the bolts that hold it in place.

The angle of the bearing block may also be adjusted the same way, though that's not something I've noticed a problem with myself. Still, it couldn't hurt to check the pinion mesh at the inside and outside edges of the crown gear just to be sure.

Thanks guys, I couldn't believe it when I saw the slots in the frames - Doh!!!

Took the gear I broke last week and saw that the damage wasn't too deep so I tidied it up a bit and though I'd give it a 'whirl' - I know it's not sounding too good at this point, but to my surprise it flew rather well today.
Even to the extent (by the third flight) of some serious pirouetting testing the tail to the limit (well, my limit anyway).

I think I'll get another gear anyhow just in case, but am glad I've got that one 'out of the way'!!

Cheers
Richard.

Someties it's possible to have the pinion skip a few teeth, without destroying the crown gear, maybe just shaving a tiny bit of material off the crown teeth here and there. If none of the teeth broke off, or got cut down to half size, you'll probably be OK.

Don't ask how I know this. :-)
