Hello All,

So, we found that the tail pitch actuator rod was bending under load which then had the effect of locking up the rod as it goes through the tail output shaft.

The core issue here was that when using the stock setup, the force is applied off the center axis of the rod. During my research, i had heard of a case of this rod breaking in flight so i had already replaced the stock item with a harder steal 2mm rod as a matter of cause.

I had already altered the stock cine-scale setup when used with the air diffuser to allow it to return back to its stock location with the push rod running almost in line with the boom (as per the stock vario tail). We also altered the air diffuser at that time to allow it to become more of a removable item in times of service.

Anyway, i remembered years and years ago drooling over an xcell pro, which had just the tail setup we were after. Ive attached pic's of the unit here, the only things i had to make were a new carbon pitch plate which is exactly the same length as the stock vario item, and a new brass center spindle which takes the push wire.

To behonest the hardest part of the modification was finding an M6x0.5mm extra fine pitched die to thread the new brass spindle.

Here's the parts list that i ordered from Ricks :-

MA122-78 C.N.C. TAIL ROTOR BELLCRANK W/BEARINGS 1 $22.70 $22.70
MA122-76 BELLCRANK SUPPORT ARM 1 $4.50 $4.50
MA0859-12 MA0859-12 - C.N.C. DELRIN PITCH RING 1 $9.96 $9.96
MA0283 BEARING 6X10 FLANGED (1) 2 $7.31 $14.62
MA122-74 BELLCRANK SUPPORT 1 $14.51 $14.51

So all in all it was about a $65 modification. I also had to make up a new carbon plate to take the bellcrank support arm (not shown in the pictures as darren has that bit still attached to the gearbox)

Anyway hope this helps.
Cheers
Tris

LATEST UPDATE

Well she's now in primer and I have almost finished putting the rivets on before taking it back for final paint. My painter is making all of the badges on paint transfer sheet, so there will be no edges like with water transfers.....should look amazing.
Here's a couple of pics of the primed body and my rivet work.

Hi Sean,

I have a friend who has a bearing company. He usually supplies industrial bearing (large) but he special ordered these for me. Only thing I could do is ask him to order some more and send them to you myself if that would help, we can sort the $'s via PayPal.

Hi Peter,

Yes they are. I have a friend who is the chief test pilot at MCAlpine in Oxford, so was lucky enough to be able to get access (and a little test flight) to an EC.
If you need any reference photos for yourself, just let me know.

Cheers

Darren, My turbine EC135 took a second place at last years LHC cup day, check the latest Helicopter world, scale by Sean Brown, so will not put it up again,
Reason for the remark, if you are going to scale to that amount of detail, will your cockpit look like this, curtesy of Paul999

Hi Peter,

I have just uploaded a pic to my gallery of the cockpit instruments and there is already a pic of the seats in my main gallery, both are anatomically correct I believe. These were taken early days prior to controls, pedals and floor finishing, so excuse that. I have yet to do the overhead switching, but I am planning to do that at the same time as the inside of the doors, the final bit in the build. This will of course be post Bicester as it has been as real struggle to get to a stage of being almost finished for that weekend. But when I retire, it will be a whole new ball game
I haven't seen the mag yet, so if you can post some pics or send me a link I would really like to see detailed shots of yours both in and outside please.

Darrens,

Lets move forward on the bearings. If its a bulk order what is the number required per order? I'll take 10 or 20. Can you send me a photo of the part and dimensions. Send my a PayPal money request. I'll PM my email.

Thanks,

Sean Harris

darrens, To start with this was a secondhand heli to me, the original expert build, was done by Modron, (painted by the guy up North who has stopped painting now), it was sold flying to Matt Jenner who had endless problems with it, he desided to do the cockpit as his first project into scale, I then did a deal with Matt and aquired the 135, spent almost a year getting into a flying machine, changing some of Matts work in the cockpit, finishing the decals, sorting the Fenestrom, and getting it into show condition

Hi Peter,

Have you since added some scale detail such as lights, antennas etc?
It would also be good to see the inside of your cockpit.

darrens ,Yes you will have to blame Matt for that, you are the first one to notice it, I have never seen the inside of an EC135, for real,
That is where you will benifit, by having access to the full size
Some more photoes

Paint looks nice Peter. If you want any photos of the full size just let me know. I can't wait to get mine in the air finished, I should hope she flies as good as the reel thing. Of all the full size helis I have flown, the EC was the nicest with the only exception of the 500E.........perhaps that could be my next project once I have my new BK117 finished!!!
