Thought I would post a few progress pics. My friend Tris made a lovely job of the front light housing which he turned out of aluminium.

Well guys, she's finally finished and we managed to take her to the Red Lodge club near Melton Mowbray for a test flight yesterday (thanks to all for the help and welcome). It was also great to meet some of the guys I knew only by their RunRyder names!!!!
All went well accept for a slight issue on the tail where we had so much tail power that the control mechanism was bending under force, stopping the tail from working. We will beef up the lever mechanism this week and be out for the next test flight this coming weekend.

Hi Paul,

It's a very long process and these scale models appear to just "eat" time. Fortunately we have had 2 people working on this but it has still took 8 months hard work to get to this stage, with long weekends and many mid week hours. I could not have done this on my own from both a time and technical stand point.

I'll second that. One could spend hours/days/weeks just working on one section or part.

Red Lodge Test Flight

Hi Darren,

I went to the Red Lodge Scale Weekend, your helicopter looked fantastic! I was looking forward to seeing this fly it's a shame you did'nt get airborne with it although it did look a handfull wih the tail. Anyway good look with this, you deserve it for all the hard work you have put into this helicopter.

Conclusions were the fenestron blades were exerting so much back pressure that
the lever on the gearbox (bell crank) twisted out of shape
the push rod from servo to gearbox bent under load
The servo arm was bending under load
The servo torque was not high enough to hold the load
The person i sold it to up the servo to 25Kg current servo was 13.5k
Change the plastic arm to metal
Make a reinforcing piece for the bell crank, then maybe make an all metal one
Change the push rod from to 6mm or 8mm

Keep at it, as it will be alovely machine to fly.

Post a video of the test session.

> Are you doing you initial testing in Heading Hold or Rate?
> Are you following the tail setup instructions to a "T"?
> What is the ratio of TR revolution for each MR revolution?
> Tail servo used?

Thanks Kittyhawk,

Much appreciated. Tris and I have worked hard to get to this stage and were equally dissapointed not to fly, but I guess teething problems should be expected on a machine like this.
Matt, we are using a 9206 and the entire mechanism is moving except for the pushrod which goes through the fenestron (fenestron actuator). This is bending under force, everything else is holding up. We have realised a fix I think so should be back out on saturday.

Hi Sean,

Sorry, forgot to answer your questions

We are testing in rate mode
yes and the ratio is 1:1.1

problem is only with the steel actuator rod which passes through the fenestron. This is magnified by the fact that the lever mechanism pushes the rod off centre which basically "encourages" it to bend if there is any resistance (natural resistance from blades wishing to return to 0 pitch).
We have now reworked this area to apply force to the rod from both sides, thus preventing it from bending off centre.
This is the most difficult thing to put into words, so hopefully you understand. Its a bit like when you hit a nail, but not on the centre of the head.....it bends.
Servo and lever mechanism is working and moving just fine, it was just this fault in the final stage of the lever system.
She did however, get a couple of inches off the ground, yehah

The setup is tight to avoid the binding - over control (note Pg 14 of 1002/25 manual) I sure you have reviewed. Also ensure your using the correct control rod. Its not a typical push rod. Its either music wire or a harden steel. If you have the one that came with the kit your spot-on.

It my understanding (reading post) that the Turbine and Benzin setup are different regarding speedup gearing and also VOG blade count - correct me if I'm off.

Hi Guys,

Well our thoughts around the tail were correct and thanks to Tris' complete redesign of the fenestron actuation, we now have a tail that works. The head was very twitchy but this soon ended once the helitronics units was activated.
The machine has now been stripped and is getting rubbed down for painting. The next time you see a picture after this post, will be in full livery!!!

And by the third flight of the evening i was even starting to through it around some

I honestly cant say more what a difference the helitronix made to the flying qualities - worth its weight in gold !.

Darren - did you get a pic of the tail before i stripped it down again ?

Glad to hear that you like it. I know there is only so much I can say about it to try and share what the flight improvement is like after adding the mixer with gyros. It's great to hear others voice their positive experiences, too. Thanks!

Joel,

It made an absolutely HUGE difference to the charectoristics of the machine. And, as we have limited channels at the moment, both gyros are running off the same gyro remote channel. This means that we have to have equal gain settings on both head gyros.
The result of this is that we are running the aileron gyro slightly high on gain and the elevator gyro is running way too low.
Once I get a 12 channel radio we will be able to "tune" the gyros individually and get even better results by raising the gain on elevator and lowering aileron.......I can't wait.
Your mixer really is a fantastic product and transforms what was normally a virtually unflyable machine......THANKS

i am very interested in how you over came the tail problem.

Can you give some more details on exactly what you did ?

Tris will be able to answer this better than me and I know he will post once he sees this, but in the meantime, we purchased a part from Miniture Aircraft which I believe was from their XL Pro 90 size heli. This was an arm which controls the tail and connects to the hub via two opposed bearings. This ensures that the pushing force does not induce or encourage the rod to bend if connecting from one point only. I didnt take photos of it but I'm sure Tris can take one and post it.
This solution looks like what should be on the machine from the start i.e. it is beautifully finished and very beefy, seriously up for the job so to speak!
I am fully confident this will stand the test of time.

Cheers
