David at gohbee and I have been talking alot lately,he is a very nice fella and really cares if we are satisfied. As some are aware I have made a custom graphic for my bird and it now has every upgrade that gohbee makes in cf and alu.Everything that Ive put on it has fit well and will do the job as intended, but I am by nature never satisfied untill I think something is the best it can be.The finish on the alu parts is a very fine matte finish that I didnt care for,so I have been polishing and balancing everything on the head and tail.David is aware of what im doing and really wants to see my finished heli,so I promised him a teaser pic.I am 95% done and will start reassembly tomorrow.so here is the teaser pic and if i finish tomorrow ill post a finish pic of the whole head.

How about a lesson on how to polish your own aluminum heli? What equipment, process, etc. Thanks!

I'm thinkink of using a rifle case vibrateing brass polisher. But I'm not sure what kind of polishing media would work best on aluminum. I know that brass comes out looking like a mirror and there is no labor involved. Do you guys think it will work?

no way century, yes it would be shiny, but the vibrator would also polish the critical bearing surfaces and could leave a sloppy fit.
All you need is 400 600 800 1000 grit paper a heavy cotton diaper and semichrome or maas metal polish.I do also have access to an industrial polisher, looks like a big grinder with cotton wheels on each end.The wheel will make very fast work of it using red rouge, but you have to have a definate feel for it or you can screw your piece very easily. To get into the smaller convex curves just use the polishing wheel on a dremel lightly loaded with dremel polishing compound. For the flat areas always use a piece of glass, this insures a perfectly true part and a drop dead finish.

OK I still have the metal and plastic mixing arms in the origonal finish.Took all of 10 minutes including stopping to take pics.Ill try and make a vid for the other side if you all want me to.

400 grit

600 grit

800 grit

1000 grit

final polish add a small amount of semichrome to your diaper and rubbing briskly keeping the diaper flat on the table.the rag will turn very black just go to a clean spot and rub until the black is gone.when you look at it this is what you will now have, and if you used the glass and were careful it will be dead true.Enjoy

Why? That entire head took me about 3 hours of enjoyable time, and as a plus as I did each part I took the time to insure the fits were as good as the finish.I know for a fact that all my parts are properly greased oiled and locktited and that all the bearings are as smooth as glass. So in the end I now have a nice looking head that I can trust to not have any preventable problems that I might not have found before. So I just chalk it up to 3 hours of dedicated setup time and am happy with the final result

Very true.
for myself just keeping up with the maintence of a fleet of 18 soon to be 19 helis is almost afull time job. So i just never seam to find the time for that sort of stuff. There allways seams to be something that needs to be fixed on one of my helis. How ever since I have been spending a great deal more of my time flying eletrics, the maintence has been getting less. They just don't seam to be as hard on themselves as the nitros.
I did just the other day put on a full metal head on my Phazor for no good reason.Seeing as the plastic head flew great.
But those cnc grips look sooo nice.
My buddy that i fly with said I'm comeing around to his BLING way of thinking. His name should be bling man .If it looks good it's on his heli.
