Tom, I too noticed that the beacon didn't seem to be as bright as the others for whatever reason. For both my beacon and my flashing strobe underneath, I put two red(the white ones turn the red lens cover pink)5mm wired in parallel in each lens. I sanded each with fine sandpaper to difuse the light a bit more then sanded a small flat on one side of each led. I then glued the two together facing away from each other at the maximum angle that would still fit under the red lens cover. This way they would be as bright seen from each side as from the top. I soldered the legs together and removed the resistor from those two flashing circuits and man are they stupid bright now. Thanks again for a great product.

Awesome Dave!
Glad it all worked out.
The more I think about it, because the LED only sees full voltage for a small fraction of time, it can operate fine without a current limiting resistor (in quick flash/beacon mode only). The "off" time of the LED lets the LED rest and dissipate what ever heat it generates. But beware, I have one 5mm LED (blue, with higher forward voltage, Vf) that when connected to the flasher without resistor, it draws so much current, it resets the PIC over and over... Use your own discretion

Yeh,... VIDEOS!!??
Pictures even!

Yes. That is what I use currently. However I know there are some that work and don't work. I use a Keyspan and it works great.

What is a keyspan?? The maker of your adaptor? Did your computer recognize it or did you have do something?

Mike,

It is the brand. It comes with drivers to load on your computer. You plug it in and the computer will recognize it. It even has a program you can open up and it will show you exactly what COM port it is using. Then you go into the 'Mini Flash' program and make sure it is the same com port. Works like a charm.

You want a 'Keyspan USA19HS High Speed USB Adapter

The link at the bottom of this post is for one I found on the net. You can search on google and find them all over the place.

My other hobby is astronomy and a lot of telescopes on the market today require a serial hookup to a computer. There is great dicussion regarding these Serial to USB adapters and the Keyspan adapter is hands down the best one out there. You can find ones for a lot less money, but don't waste your time.

So it's ok to leave the resistor off the led on the beacon since it's not on all the time??

Oooo... posts!
Hi Mike,
Glad to hear the USB-to-Serial converter is working fine. Yes, I have successfully run (via Mini-Beacon) a 1 watt luxeon with no series resistor now for over 1 month with no ill effects. I had also saw you posted a question re: the programming of the Mini-Flash... something to do with tuning on/off all four channels via a transmitter switch... Did you figure this out yet? Just curious... and always willing to help.

Yep I figured it out. As for the mini beacon and leaving out the risistor I failed to mention the LED I'd like to use is a clear 8mm I got from you. Would that pull too much power without the resistor being it is an 8mm?

Hi Mike,
That white 8mm should run just fine without the series resistor. Typically, it is designed to draw roughly 40-50 milliamps (Luxeons draw roughly 350mA).

More LEDs?... Sure!

Reminds me too.. I need to order more!

Anyone have any pictures of the 1 watt Luxeon-like LED mounted on a body? Just curious what it looks like mounted.

Anyone experience any problems using a 2.4 module in a radio (FF9) to switch lights on and off?
I have the mini flash and beacon simulator and can not get it to work (switch on/off) from my radio in 2.4 mode. If I switch back to 35MHz all works fine

mylee,
Which 2.4GHz system you using? I have been using mine with both the Spektrum AR700 and 9000 Rxs for quite some time now with no issues. Regardless of the receiver, all receivers (for the most part) output similar servo signals (1ms-2ms), which is what the Mini-Flash and Mini-Beacon use to determine the on/off control. Are you trying to control the Mini-Beacon from the Mini-Flash or are you connecting the Mini-Beacon to a spare Rx channel? Are you having problems controlling both the Mini-Flash and Mini-Beacon or just one of them?
I have seldom had customer having difficulties with the servo control function for the Mini-Flash. Usually, it's an adjustment in the channel's end-points usually that needs tweaking in order to get the Mini-Flash servo control working satisfactory.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the quick reply, appreciated.
I'm using a FF9 with a spektrum module, AR9000 receiver and just can't get either module to switch on or off via the TX. I've set up channel 7 and 8 on switches A and B and increased the end points both ways to 140% with no luck. I can't get the beacon controller to power from the mini flash either, but this isn't an issue as I have a spare channel to run it constantly, which is now prefered
What I was trying to do is run two strobes alternate double flash and a constant on or off (landing light) swiched from the TX.
I have programmed the mini flash and achieved my strobe effect no problem. At present to get round the landing light problem I have installed a mini servo that operates a micro switch. This mini servo seems to work fine on either switch.
It's probably me over looking something very simple I'm sure

Mylee,
Let me test that out tonight. I'm using a similar setup (FF( w/ Spektrum Tx) but had tested with the AR7000 receiver. I do have some AR9000s so I'll try those hopefully later tonight and report back. The funny thing is that you mentioned it worked fine on the 35MHz but not with the 2.4Ghz receiver. Hm...

MIni-Flash works with Futaba/Hitec/JR FM and Spektrum 2.4Ghz receivers...

Forgot to post this last week. I did in fact test the Mini-Flash LED controller with both the Spektrum AR7000 and AR9000 receivers... all worked fine (i.e. power & servo control/zones).
