when i had my 30 size airwolf a few years ago i always hated the fact that i had to remjove the rotorhead to get the top cowling off so on my fifty, i made the top section a two piece. the rear half is secured with 440 bolts and blind nuts while the front is secured with one in the front and plugs intothe rear half. some sort of quick disconect latch willwork fine for removing it quick and easy to start it if its nitro and you dont want to put a hole for the starter probe. a bulkhead at the separation line makes for a nice and rigid setup. as yours is painted already, i would probably not go this route unles as a last resort as cutting can be risky to the paintjob.

Everyone should do this mod.. Nitro or Elect.. Painted or unpainted... It makes getting at the mechanics so much easier.. You can do it so you can't even see where the break is...

The secret is go to your LHS and pickup a jewelers saw.. the blades are so thin and fine toothed... take your time and cut just next to the panel line.. it will cut like a hot knife thru butter.. As you can see.. you'll not even see the break close up..

At present, I've glue the screw hole shut and an antenna will go here.. I need a unique way of securing the hatch.. I am using Earth Magnets glued in but am not really sure I'm totally happy with that.. Any ideas out there???

i used the "plug" system. the rear section is plugged intot he main body at the rear vertical area, then two screws with blind nits secure it to the fuse. the front is then plugged into the rear section the same way and secured with one screw with a blind nut. works really well. i used a hot knife to cut the top cowling right on that panel line so it isnt easily seen. the hot knife does a fine job with a small cut line as well.
i made bulkheads to help keep the shape whenits all together and to give the front section a spot for the plugs to go into.

okay gotcha. i do have a hole there but i disguised it as an air intake, sorta that teardrop shape. it is now painted and being a dark color, it hides it well. wont be the case with the white on yours though. i dont like the idea of the magnet either. the vario slide latches work well but may not work wellin this case as that taper wont hide or house them very well.

Excellent work and idea. I will do that with mine too. I know I mentioned cutting out dashboards, and that is in the works still

but I can eaisly cut out a blukhead for this mod on the cnc if needed.

I will work on it and post it here case others want it.

Have you considered using a small metal plates on one part and small Radio Shack magnets on the other?

The turbine jet fellows and the large airplane scalers use that method for hatches and canopies all the time.

i trust the magnet idea fine, i just dont like where that cowling will go should the glue fail

the kits do come with a slide and lock mechanism that may just be the ticket for that though.

I cut mine tonight, used a hack saw blade and it came out really good. Much nicer. Making the bulkheads will be very easy as you can put the part down on the wood and simply trace and cut it out... I think I will just make mine freehanded.

Hey gadgetdude. great work.this is really a well detailed tread, with interest i looked at all of this. I am new to this. and just finished my bell222.with T-rex 600e.I agree that the retracts take a lot of time for tune up. will post some more.

seems a lot of us are doing airwolf/222's. my 50 size airwolf is almost ready for its first flight since completion. i have to get the cockpit finished and the lights installed. a few other little details which there are actually a million of them, and she will be finished.
for my gear system, i went a little different with the nose gear. i rearranged a few things to allow for a full cockpit. i also used the servo slowing units from hobby lobby. i will post pics soon.

O man I think you made my stomach hurt on that one!!! LOL!!!

I like to think of it as slow percision building using the most time possible to get the least done....

No paint but I do have the mechanics in the fuse for some more percision work hahhaaaaa LOL

Actually I have been occupying my time with a new program I got called Vcarve Pro for my machine. Awesome. Here are some pics of stuff I have recently made. Now I really just have to get on a bell 222 dashboard for us guys.

nice built, but I wolder what is the weight and flight duration penalty due to the extra weight of the scale fuselage ? What is the RTF weight of the bird now ? what flight time do you get ?
