e-Zoom, Shogun, Dolphin > Request help with Align motor and pinion in 3DX 400

Hi everyone,

I have a 3DX 400 Shogun clone that has been "on ice" for a couple years now. I got around to putting it together, and discovered that my Align motor with 13T pinion (3mm shaft) would not fit all the way "up" into the frame. Basically, I think the pinion is too long. I actually ordered the pinion through a vendor on Ebay, it holds with an allen screw. I have attached pictures, the pinion itself is itself about 11 mm in height.

Should I cut the pinion with my Dremel tool? I would have to cut the top portion since the allen bolt is at the bottom. Are there any good pinions that are 3mm, but shorter? The top of the pinion is against the blue metal belt drive pulleys, and I certainly don't want to have metal on metal grinding of the pinion against that. In fact, there is no way at the moment that the top of the align motor can contact the bottom the engine mount (due to the tall 11mm pinion).

Help!

I have had to not only cut the pinion, but in some cases the motor shaft in order to fit a motor/pinion setup in my modified Shogun V1. I used a cutoff wheel on the Dremel--no problemo!

Anyone else have any ideas on what to do? Are there any shorter pinions for the Align motors?

I've not found any shorter align pinions. I've done it two different ways. I've cut the pinion (works fine) and I've also cut a "shim" to lower the motor in the mount. You'll need longer mounting screws and that was not cake to find either, had to order them. I had the same problem with the medusa motor I have in one of my guns. It takes align pinions and I bought a couple sets. for that one, I just cut the pinion.

If it were me, I'd dremmel the pinion to fit. the 3dx belt guides don't give much room so expect the clearance to be TIGHT....make sure your covering the entire main gear but round the pinion off so its just meshing the whole main gear. the clearance is like .5mm if that if done just right.

if you go too much, no worries....it'll work for dozens of hours of flying. good luck and keep us updated.

I think I'll try the dremel, extending the mount with shims will cause the mount to be weak.

I don't know, they are not that expensive anymore. It's a tight squeeze past the support struts, though.
