why are you guys leaning over with a transmitter hot around your neck anyway?

T hold should always be on when near the aircraft period..

you can bump the throttle all day lone with thold and nothings gonna happen.

on top of that unless you are actively using your transmitter it shouldnt be around your neck while handling the aircraft anyway.

put it on after the aircraft is ready to fly.

I guess being in the Navy and working with real aircraft for 10 years hammered safety into my head but common folks don't blame the strap on your laziness and inattentiveness.

Wise words from USN there.

FWIW - the Tx stays on the floor next to me whilst I start the heli and get the idle stabilised. The strap only goes round my neck once the heli's at the take off point. Once I land, the engine is shut off and I take the Tx off my neck before stopping the blades. If I land and want to keep the engine running, perhaps to adjust the needle etc. the the tx also comes off my neck, again before stopping the blades.

I have nudged the throttle accidentally before on my electric FP helis, both coaxial and single rotor, but that was due to me NOT taking the tx off my neck

Tach.

As I said earlier I don't think it's safe. It only needs to happen once and you'll change.

My 2 cents, using a strap can be safe as long as you form good habbits.

Before flight I have a habbit to FIRST turn tx on, hit throttle hold and THEN to turn heli on. I do all this before placing strap around my neck.
Once ready to fly, to put strap on I use my finger to secure throttle hold switch in its on position while pulling strap over my head.

After landing my habbit is to hit throttle hold to land or immediately after landing. Then AFTER landing but BEFORE approaching heli I use my finger to secure throttle hold switch in its on position while pulling strap off.

This way my tx is in my hands way before I even get close to the heli and there is no way throttle hold is going to get turned off in the process of putting the strap on or taking it off.

There is no royal road to flying helis but the sim sure helps!

Accidents don't happen when checklists and attention to detail is observed.
and the Navy doesn't call them "accidents" that infers that someone wasn't paying attention.
they are called incidents, and 98% of those incidents are when someone didn't follow a checklist for a procedure.

As for the neckstrap.. I just dont see how people can be so damn lazy that they arn't taking safety seriously while working on their helis.

its really easy.. instead of being lazy and just taking off the quick release on your transmitter you take off the ENTIRE NECK STRAP while working on anything.

Ive watched countless people at fun flys working over hot helis with that strap dangling like a necktie over machinery.

not very freaking smart.

If people are that stupid and careless maybe they shouldn't be flying RC at all? they could hurt someone else if they arn't smart enough to even take personal safety precautions.

call it 10 years of being a Navy "Safety Nazi" or just being anal but hey that's how I see it.

you are a product of your environment where safety is the upmost concern due to the fact that boneheads are allowed to enlist as well.

dont compare yourself to civilians...its might make you sound too anal.

and remember...there's the navy way and then there's the right way

of course you've never heard that one before.

EDITED:

btw...I leave neck strap on and just turn it around towards my back out of harms way...radio detached of course...learned from flying planks to keep away from prop...and no...did not learn it the hard way.

The only injury I've ever herd of from a neck strap is when my wife grabbed mine and tried to yank my head off so I couldn't go flying Seriously, if you fly pinch you need a neck strap and I would recommend one regardless. Never herd of anyone getting hurt by one? Common Sense does apply to neck straps just like every other aspect of this hobby

I use one

Im the only one at my field that uses one and I have reason to. Mainly we all know that sometimes when your learning a new manuever you get nervous and your palms will get sweaty, this way I know that if I were to loose grip on the radio, its only gonna drop a couple inches and then I can grab it back quickly. Its never happened to me but it gives me extra security. As far as reaching down to stop your blades, I usually just clip the neckstrap to my shirt or tuck it inside of my shirt. Especially when starting an airplane I usually have it tucked in my shirt

I try to hold myself to a few rules of thumb (largely thanks to witnessing others use of neckstraps and reading stories on this sub-forum):

1. Keep TX + neckstrap connected, and keep neckstrap and TX off of my neck while I place my heli on the field, connect the battery, etc.

2. Only place the neckstrap around the neck once ready for flight.

3. Take off the neckstrap + TX once the flight is over, go slap in another battery, and get back to flying!

Sometimes I use one, sometimes I don't. Depends on my mood and what I'm flying.

I use a neckstrap. The only time my Tx is strapped is when I am flying.

Neck Stap Incidence

You who don't use a neck strap while flying are a better man than I. Neck strap is a must for my pinch style.

But as for 98% of incidence????? I've only seen about that 2% and both were with someone picked up the tx with the strap connected.

One guy grabbed the tx with one hand the strap with other hand to put over there head(again, while connected to tx) and the thottle hold on heli was taken off in that movement by the strap, then whappow!!. Hot start and scared the crap out of everyone.

The other guy with the same incident but with a plank just this weekend. Plank don't have throttle hold and the throttle stick was pulled full power by the strap (again, while connected to tx), then Shazzam!!! was cut on the arm in the process......

I was going to start a new post on how to add a thottle hold on plank.

Sorry but all it took was to witness 2% to tell me to keep my neck strap on.

For you guys who say straps are dangerous because you can snag a stick on the strap...

Its because you're using the strap improperly.

It takes a careless person to snag a strap on the stick, and by careless person I'm talking about the guy who walks back & forth between the pits, flight line, and takeoff area with his radio DANGLING around his neck, bouncing around with every step.

Thats why you UNHOOK the strap and CARRY your radio!

edit: Oh wow

I just bumped a thread that was exactly 1 year old today without even realizing it.

3 years is enough time wasted. Taking a break for a while.

Wow, Dood .

I agree 100% though!

I can't fly right without my neckstrap (pinch). And it's a lot safer using one as you can't drop your radio in flight etc.

Unclip whenever you're not flying and always hold your thumb down on the throttle stick, even when in throttle hold.
