Thanks, Turbinator.

I may have to send one to you to get drilled out.

Actually, I did some searching around the internet and found this info:

http://www.sdp-si.com/
Click on "Buy Online", change to "Metric Unit", click on "Gears", "Spur Gears", "Metal". Then select "1" under "Module (Pitch)", "6.00" under "Bore Size", and "With Hub & set screw" under "Hub Style."

And I was able to order a pinion for a 6mm shaft with 12 teeth, modulus 1 for about 10 bucks made of carbon steel. I think this will work. If it doesn't, I'll let you guys know and I'll send a new century 12 tooth to Turbinator so I can get my Chinook flying correctly.

So I received the new premade pinion from using the ordering method I detailed above and it works fine.

I would point out two things. They charged me $10 to ship a $10 pinion so that was annoying but I'm glad to have something that works since I don't have machine shop access to machine my own bore.

Also, this pinion is a bit tall. It's about an inch long but I just elongated the slots that the motor mounts in for the frame and I was able to achieve a nice mesh. The motor just sits a little lower which is fine.

I have it hovering and flying now and it really is much better than with nitro. Much more docile to tune. I will post a pic and maybe a video.

Here is mine in hover.

Everything seems to be working.

I just ordered some new batteries. Evo 4s, 3750. These should give me decent flight time.

Is anybody applying any compound to the belt for maintenance?

Hi all; I have a problem, but I am sure there will be somebody here that can set me straight.
I am using the same setup as most E-Flite 60, CC 85HV, 2 x 4S1P battery packs.
My problem is that when I connect the power to the speed controller with the throttle set at half stick or higher, I immediately get eight beeps from the motor, I close the throttle to arm the motor and when I throttle up nothing happens, the red light on the controller continues to flash repeatedly, all the servos are working as they should. I have tried dropping the throttle trim right back, but it has no effect.
I haven’t down loaded any new firmware at this stage; I just wanted to check that the motor was turning in the right direction.
Just by the way, I assembled all the blades and started checking them for balance, and found that I had four rear blades and only two front blades, they were all nicely balance in sets though, the three rear blades balanced in at 112grm and the rest were 108grm.

Do you have the castle link to check/adjust your settings on the computer?

I had several problems with my CCHV85 when I tried to run anything other than stock settings and so I used the castle link, updated the software in the CCHV85 and then went to default settings.

The only setting that I have since altered is the brake where I have made this as soft as possible.

I have had trouble with govenor mode in that the motor accelerates too quickly which causes my blades to come out of alignment and then they may touch so I have not been able to get this to work you in govenor mode but when I re-set the factory default settings with the castle link, I was able to fly it just fine.

Also, I use a 9c super and I have the endpoints set at default (i.e. 100 and 100) but I believe I had to reverse the throttle channel to get the CC HV85 to arm (I'm at work so I am not 100% sure but I believe this was recommended in the CC HV85 manual).

For Michael,

I would also add that when I turned the brake off, I had difficulty arming the speed controller and the only way it would arm was when I changed the lower endpoint to 140 from 100 and then I placed the throttle stick all the way down.

Before I set the endpoint to 140, my speed controller would just flash red blips and not arm.

Thanks tow cobra, yes I do have the Castle Link, I haven’t connected it at this stage, all I wanted to do is run up the motor. I tried reversing the throttle, but it made no difference. I'll try changing the end point and see if that works. I'm using the JR9X2 radio (JR9303).

Now that I think about it, I had the same problem. My speed controller wouldn't arm and I just got the blinking light on the speed controller.

I think you mentioned this but I also placed the trim all the way down as well as adjusting the EPA to 140 (or 150 in your case) for the lower end.

It just sound like the controller isn't arming and that is probably because it doesn't think your throttle is at the lowest point (or at least a low enough point) and then you will get the additional beeps indicating that it is armed.

As I said, this lowest point seems to change depending on the settings for the speed controller. When I take the brake off, I have to put my endpoint way down to arm the speed controller but the way I have it now, I use normal endpoints (100 and 100) and it arms fine when I have in stock setting.

One more thing.

In terms of rotation, if you match the wires up by color from the HV85 speed controller to the Eflite 60 motor, then the rotation should be correct.

i.e.

Speed controller to Motor
Red ..... Red
Black..... Black
White..... Blue (this is the only one left that doesn't have a matching color)

So just match the colors up and the remaining leads have to go together and it should rotate correctly with the speed controller in stock setting mode (at least mine does).

All's well now, it was all my fault, I made an assumption!!! I assumed that because I was using a separate BEC, I would need to remove the positive wire from the plug that goes into the receiver, WRONG. When I connected to the Castle Link it wouldn’t make contact either, that’s when I finally twigged that it probably needed all three wires to work.
You know what they say, you should never ASSUME. All I need now is a full set of blades for the front rotor.

Michael,

I made the same mistake as I have used Castle Creations speed controllers before and so to disable to the BEC in the speed controller, one should cut the red wire.

Except the HV85 manual states that there is no built in BEC.

I realized that too and then resoldered the lead and then my ESC worked.

This information should be useful to others making the electric conversion.

Everything is working fine now, I have reprogrammed the controller to governor in the helicopter settings and the only change that I needed to make was to the throttle end point, it is now H100 to L110.
Thanks for your help tow cobra.

Sorted Out!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice job getting it sorted out...... I would really like to see some footage of one of these flying in this post..... but a BIT too cold in my region to pull it off..... it is supposed to hit 40 on Saturday... Might give it a try....

Sounds like "09" is going to see more of these twin headed wonders flying around.....if we all meet up at IRCHA we could "TRY" some formation flying!!!!

Have any of you guys tried lubricating the belt to smooth the motion at a given tension. I found some info on the trex belt and people seem to recommend silicone lube for this.

As in this post I found on another heli site:
There are a few trade names of silicone based lube spray. Easyglide is one. you can get it from halfords sometimes called rubber and nylon lubricant.
You'll find it also in chandlers as it will lubricate parts that are splashed with water such as the pulleys etc on sailing boats - and it won't go all black and stick to the ropes and sails. We use it on the pulley systems in our hang gliders.
Furniture polish like Mr Sheen or Pledge will do the job well and is really easy to find and so far seems to be kind to the rubber.
WD40 contains oil that will degrade the rubber. Rubber will generally swell as a result.

I have been squirting the silicone spray down the end of the tail boom generously. Yuo notice the effect immediately as it takes a lot longer for the rotor to freewheel to stop for the same belt tension.

What do you guys think? Has anyone tried this or do you guys keep your belts well tensioned and without any form of lube?

I haven't tried lube myself for fear of the belt slipping but I am definitely considering it and would love to get some feedback first.

I don't think I would lube the belt! Because if the belt were to slip it would cause the blades to hit each other, which a few of us have had happen, because we were not tightening the belt enough!

Lube????

I have to agree with Richard about the possible slippage!!
I have been flying mine now for two seasons with no type of lube without any problems...
There was a problem with the new Align 500 belt that was causing radio glitching and that is why they were looking for a fix..and I guess the lube helped with the fix they needed...
Think I am going to continue as I have been... But DO keep an eye on that tension!!!!!
