Power 60 and 8s LiPo's

Hi all, I have recently taken delivery of the Hirobo Chinook and would like to build it as an electric model. I have been reading all the posts and will probably follow the trend using the E-Flite Power 60 motor with the CC Phoenix HV85 esc and 2 x 4000mAh LiPo’s.
My query is that after reading the specifications on the motor they recommend that only 5-7s LiPo packs be used. As everyone seems to be using 8s packs I was wondering if there has been any problems with the motor.

No problems so far! Mine runs about 150F after about 8-9 mins of hovering! Probably have 25-30 hovering flights on it now!

Power 60 and 8s LiPo's

Thanks Richard, that seems quite reasonable. Anyone else have any comments?

Same here, 8 cells, 50+ cycles, no issues what so ever. I tried both 3750 and 5000 mah bats, I'd go with only the 5000's if I could send them back and repurchase.

I have mounts made up if you need one, $65 + $10 for shipping

My Conversion...

I am using an AXI 4120/14 motor with Turbinator mount, with CC HV85 and (2) 5s 3700 in parrallel... pulling 9 1/2 minutes till shut down so I set my timer for 8 minutes (usually done flying at about 6 minutes though)... works great... no heat anywhere and the power is awesome.. you are right in FF you hear the blades.... check out the 2008 IRCHA DVD from SKS and you can hear it very well.... even the spool up sounds GREAT......

Has anyone tried using the A123 cells in this conversion ?

I guess not having to remove them for charging would be very benefical.

A123's

I run a 2-5 cell packs in parallel, 3700's for 7400mah..... and get a 9 1/2 minute flight time....if I am looking for a long flight...
It would take 2 -6 cell packs and only give you 4200mah (??) which would most likely give me about a 5 minute flight.... I am sure that the little added weight would not bother it.....and being able to lay the packs out along each side of the frames could be a plus.... might be something to look at!!!! Stan

Well, I've considered converting my Hirobo Chinook to electric for a few years (pretty much each winter I've thought about it) and I think the winter is arriving for me to take the plunge.

I have my motor mount from Turbinator. The Eflite 60 is on the UPS truck right now and I have a CC HV85 and the align BEC ready along with 2 EVO 4s packs.

Any pitfalls to watch out for in this conversion as I get started?

As it stands, my Chinook flies reasonably well with nitro but I'm tired of the vibration of the engine and of course the smoke/noise for this heli (otherwise, I love nitro in my pod and boom machnines).

You won't regret taking the plunge, the twin rotor is so much more a pleasure in electric form, smoother, cleaner, quieter, more reliable, safer, REALISTIC too!!

Sounds like you got every thing covered, the conversion is quick and easy, short of taking the body off and on and figuring out a way to swap out batteries. That is why I like the 5000 mah packs, I don't take them out to charge them. I get a solid 12 minute flight with more then 20%capacity left in the batts, they don't even get warm, I balance charge them on plug extensions through a little cut out in the bottom, and ready for another flight in less then an hour, works for me.

Any questions, just ask in this forum, these guys will all help you along, GOOD LUCK!!

Sounds Like A Plan!!!!!

tow cobra, it sure sounds like a plan to me and you have everything you need or at least on its way.....
There is only one "mod" that I would suggest and that is to the front mast top collar..... it is supplied with (2) set screws.... and as it is, it seems that everyone that has done the conversion has had a problem with this slipping and then causing the loss of the main gear... (I never had a problem on nitro!!!)
Once you have everything lined up and installed.... back one of the set screws out of the collar... then use a center tap to mark the EXACT location of the set screw center.... then remove the shaft and mill a small dimple into the main shaft so that the set screw can seat in it.... once done, replace the entire shaft and use ONLY the set screw that you marked along with some locktite....do not put the second set screw in.... Mine now has several flights on it since this mod and NO PROBLEMS... (Thanks to the "Dalton Gang" for the fix)
Other then this minor mod, you should be good to go..... good luck and let us know how it works for you.... the constant power makes this a pleasure to fly..... Hope to see you at the Seaview Spring opener with it in "09" Good Luck.... Stan

man :Turbinator: you are flying 5000Mah batteries and are getting 12 min flights and only recharging them in under an hour!!! what kind of batteries are you flying (how many cells)? and how many packs? and what kind of charger are you using in order to charge at such a fast rate??

Axeman,

I use 2 Thunder Power 1010C's with TP210 balancers and charge each battery individually at 7.5 amps putting about 4200-4300 ma back into each pack in about 45-50 minutes. I use a 30 amp 13.8 volt power supply when at home and just take a small 1200 watt generator to the field for the few times I have gotten to the field. From memory as I have not seen the packs in months as they stay in the fuse they are Thunder Power Extreme V2 4 cell 5000 maH packs, 2 of them running the model in series.

Wanted to get some info on the BEC.

I just set up my CC HV85. This does not have a BEC circuit so power for the receiver needs to be provided independent of my speed controller.

I did purchase the align 6amp BEC but the instructions indicate that this is only for a 7.4v lipo. Are you guys using a separate battery for the receiver or using this BEC with a higher input voltage from your main batteries or another BEC.

The other option is just to keep the 4.8v battery I already have on my chinook to independently power the receiver which seems like a simple enough solution.

Airborne Battery

I still run my original airborne battery for the rx and servos... along with a volt watch to keep an eye on things..... guess I am just the "Old School" type!!!!! Has been working just fine and the battery mounted up front helps to balance the heli..... but my 5s packs are a bit heavier then the 4s that the others are using....

Good Luck and will be waiting to see those pic's!!!!!!!!!

Stan

E-Conversion is complete.

I hovered it this morning. Can't say I miss the vibes of my nitro powerplant at all.

I think I will stick with my orignal and separate battery to power the servos/gyro and I also use a voltwatch to monitor it.

Hope to get a picture up soon of the newly powered machine.

By the way, this conversion was made very easy by this forum. You guys have basically detailed everything needed and the mount from Turbinator fits perfectly. The conversion is easily done in 1-2 nights once you have all of the parts which are very easy to obtain at this time as E-powered flight keeps growing in popularity.
