Nice work. That thing is awesome. I have a Chinook that is still nitro powered but I think the electric conversion is the way to go. I just haven't been brave enough to attempt it. It must hover nicely to be able to fly in such a small area. Nice job.

Congrats!

Just finished my e-chinook as well. Same motor, 11 tooth pinion, Head speed 1600 RPM, pulling 21 amps out of ground effect hover from 8S 3700 LiPo's. No real heat buildup anywhere to speak of. Also, I'm running carbon NHP blades, which I love!

Gyro settings are default values. I'm onto slow circuits, and I've noticed that pitch is very sensitive especially in any wind. The yaw response is also really dull. I suspect this is a model that will never have really balanced control responses.

I spent a lot of time tracking both heads, but they seem to go out of track very quickly.

I love the spool up and run down. The noise is very turbine-like!

What pinion are you using, Frogit?

E-conversions are very cool for this bird. But one ???? with the body installed, how will you access/change the batteries?

I meant to do that!

Hi thanks, the pinion is century chp mg 512, 12t 5mm 1.o mod. works great 90% on tx gives me 1649 and 90.5% 1700 91% 1790. 89.5 % 1560.
all is at default . It seems to just float not like the t rex 600 flybarless I hope to make two lift out panels for the batts or covers on the bottom to get them out???

Yes, nice job on this E-conversion. I too have Hirobo CH-46, hate nitro, been thinking of going electric and this post has brough that eagerness back as right now I do not fly model becasue of displeasure with nitro.

Can some one PM or post part #'s of all parts used, motor, pinion, mount, ESC used, and Lipo's used and if possible how much it all cost so I can start saving!!

THANKS!!

Never mind the PM, please make the info public!! I also have a CH-46 and would like to make it e-powered! The biggest obsticle that I see, is a motor mount. I really like the e-flite power 60 setup, it would be nice if someone could knock-off a few motor mounts for us guys that don't have machining abilities.

E chinook motor mount

It seems that many out there are thinking of converting their Nitro's to electric, but are concerned about the engine mounts.

Don't be!

I used the standard Nitro mount with little modification. I used some aluminium angle bought from my local hardware store. Home Depot stock it in the USA, B&Q in the UK. I drilled the angle to fit the standard mount using the engine bolt holes, then drilled the top flat sections for the e-flite motor. Works fine!

Before fabrication I drew it all out on AutoCAD. If anyone wants the DWG file then post a reply to this message (assuming I can find it!)

On nitro .46 I run 1400-1500 RPM on the heads, what is better pinion for this speed, 11 tooth, 12 or some thing else? I was at hobby store today already looking at motors!! Really like this idea!! What is motor frogit used, eflite power 60? What is the Kv on ths motor?
Did you use 2 2700mah 4 cell lipos in parallel or one big battery?
THANKS for any help that can be offered

as jbs said the mount is not so hard his will work great to as I said mine was made by a friend, the mount has the top 4 bolt holes are slotted so the motor can move in and out, as the side holes in the frame are slotted for up and down movement if there is more guys interested I could pull it and see about getting some made up but not sure about the cost. the esc is the cc 85hv in gov mode and bec is the align 3amp. the batt are 3700 4s the batt holder is the fuel tank holder from the kit and cut it down the middle and bolted them to the frame, the cg is right on the batts counter the weight of the motor up front.the motor is the e-flight 60 and the kv is 400 .

in my post the the pinion # is chp mg512 made by century Heli it is 12t and 5mm which you drill out to 6mm for motor shaft. 1.0 mod fits the pitch on the heli, the % is the head speed I get in gov mode ie 89.5% = 1560 .the default settings is the hirobro factory settings ie gyros and mixing

Chinook Blades

I trashed my first blades when the screw holding the rear head on worked loose.

Mark Tilbury reccomended the NHP carbon blades. These are cheaper than the Hirobo stock blades, and they are specifically built for the chinook/vertol. They also come matched and balanced. I checked them anyway for balance- they were virtually spot on.

In case you don't know them- NHP is Northern Helicopter Products. I've used many of their blades in the past and always been impressed.

As to handling- I did'nt really have enough time on the first set to get the feel of them. I can say that the NHP's feel fine. Hovering auto's are good, lots of stored inertia in the blades.

Cost of it all

I just purchased all the bits for the conversion, about $650 total for all; power 60 motor, castle phoenix 60 speed controller, BEC, 2 pc's evopower extreme 3850 4s 25 C lipos, 2 pinions, wire, switches and some misc bits. Now all I have to do is come up with a motor mount, wish I could've bought one of those too!! When I get around to tearing it all apart and making up a mount I may make a few and a print as most likely it will fit to convert shuttles too which I have a couple of and wouold probably interest many. Sounds like some one could turn a buck making these things, too bad I don't have access to a CNC at work or we'd be missing a bit of aluminum!!!! Takes to long to make by hand on a mill to be profitable to make a buck on let alone one's time. I Can't wait to see and hear it whirl, I'm impressed with just the power system on the bench!! I can see first test hover in my living room, can't wait to see the wifes face for that one!! There goes the curtains!!
