Hey all

Just put this together today:

Small panorama tour inside Guildford Cathedral

I have a few questions:

1) Do all the hotspots work for you?
2) Do you like the general interface of this Java panorama-viewer?
3) Can you suggest any other good online panorama-viewers that are worth looking at?

Guilford Panorama

Very Good I enjoyed flying around ! Hot spots worked OK for me. Also enjoyed your Cisbury Ring flight, just down the road from me!

The hot spots worked for me using the Firefox browser on Windows XP. I like the Shockwave based SPi-V viewer over the Java version. The spherical pano looks better when panning around.

Which lens did you use?

phil - Hmmm the latest version of Shockwave isn't compatible with Intel Macs yet (what I use) .... thanks for the link anyway

Those were shot with a Canon Powershot A620 with the 0.7x wide-angle converter and my Panorama head.

Each one required about 30 images.

I didn't know that about the Intel Macs, I guess that is because I don't have a Mac. I did find find out that it will work if you run the browser in Rosetta emulation mode.

Nice job with the DIY pano head and cheap too! I built my own pano head too but added servos for the pan & tilt that are run by an Arduino board. I'm using the Canon 10-22mm lens and have to take about 22 pictures for each spherical pano until I get a new lens. It would be easy to add an Arduino board to automate shooting panos from your telescopic mast making shooting them much easier and fun.

I was going to ask if you had any other spherical panoramas online but I just found them on your website. They look great!

The only thing that would make your Guildford Cathedral better would be to shoot it using exposure bracketing and combine the pictures with Enfuse to recover the blown out windows.

Joe - I was using manual mode, F2.8 and 1/60s, cloudy white balance (forgot to change that when I started them but didn't prove to be a problem)

Panos are a good way to share things like this with people across the world!

Phil - Yeah I saw that too ... bit of a fuss to have to quit the program, change the settings and open it again ... Hopefully it won't be too long before they release a version compatible with the Intel Macs

That's an incredible pano head you built! So do you just set it going and then it does everything automatically? .... very cool! I've been thinking of getting the 10-22 for my 40D for panoramas but have been wondering whether a fisheye would be better .... hmmm

Yes I was thinking about trying bracketed exposures only just recently ... thing is my camera doesn't have a bracketing function so I would need to manually change the shutter speed for each shot .... do-able I guess, but quite a bit of work! Have you done bracketed panos? If so, do you use a remote trigger to take the series of bracketed exposures? I imagine it's crucial not to move/jog the camera in any way between the shots or the final photos might not overlap ...!

Thanks and Yes, I turn it on, sit back and watch until it's done taking the pictures. Here's a video of it going through the 21 shots in 90 seconds. I'm still tinkering with it and it will be getting a LCD with a few buttons next week so I can change the routine without connecting it to a computer.

I tried the auto bracketing exposures for the first time Saturday with a pano of the inside of my car. With my 30D it was very easy to set up and I programmed the mount to take 3 shots in every position. You're 40D would be the same when you get the lens for it.

The new Sigma 10mm would be a better lens for panos vs. the Canon 10mm-22mm. I'm waiting for one or two reviews on the lens before I buy it. Here's the first panorama I've seen taken with it. 8 shots +2 are all you would need to shoot with your 40D.

That 10mm does look interesting ... although on Canon cameras it only gives a 167° FOV, rather than 180° ... hopefully that won't mean too many more shots are needed for the full spherical pano ... I'd be interested to see some samples from that lens on a Canon body

Have you tried assembling your HDR pano? Would you use PTGui Pro? Or would you assemble two or three full panos separately and then use HDR software like Photomatix to blend them together?

I've only started working on this project in late January in my spare time. The mechanics are about done with the work now focusing on the electronics and programming. I'm not an electrical engineer or programmer so I'm learning everything along the way so these things will take me a little longer than it should. I'm building this as another hobby project but I could sell a few short kits in about a month or so when the electronics are completed.

After looking at the pano you made in your workshop I think you've got all the raw material to build one tonight! Just add two servo gearboxes and a microcontroller. Just make it large enough and strong enough for your 40D. Once you shoot a panorama in 10 shots with that camera and the right lens you won't want to go back to shooting 30.

The purpose of my pano mount is to take spherical panoramas, gigapans, time lapse panoramas and any other type of panorama from the ground or a mast. This design is overkill and heavy for any aerial shots. I'll make an simple, lighter aerial version for my Joker in early April to use when scenery becomes green again. I might add a digital compass to that one to compensate for any small tail movements while the camera is panning.

I haven't but I've only shot a few panoramas to test my rig. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to using PTGui and Photoshop. Buying the right lens for panos will make these shots easier too when the lighting can change outside in a matter of seconds. I'll still continue to use the Canon 10-22mm but it might be zoomed to the 22mm end for higher resolution gigapans.

My goal is to have this completed for the spring when everything is in bloom. I can then focus on taking good pictures and not tinkering with the mount design or programming...at least not too much. If nothing else I'm having fun learning and experimenting with panoramic photography.
