hi guys,

i have just begun to assemble my Graupner Heim Electro Skaler mechanics. it has a Compact outrunner motor that is rated at 385 kV. it comes with two different pinion gears. at 28 tooth and 32 tooth. there is a secondary gear drive so the gear ratios work out to 7.5 to 1 and 6.75 to 1 respectfully.

my problem is this: on a 10 S setup the calculated headspeeds will be in the 2200 rpm range. WAY TOO HIGH for scale flying.

my question is this : how do i get around this ? do i use the throttle curve to slow the head down ? i think this will cause overheating issues as brushless motors are designed to run at near 100%.

please shed some light.

thanks, darren

Hi Darren, the 385kv @ 37v gives a motor rpm of 14245.So at a gear ratio of 7.5/1 it should give a head speed of 1899 you could probably slow that down to 1600 and just keep an eye on the temp. But I think that is still a bit to fast for scale and would not suggest slowing it down much more than that on the throttle curve. Are there any other pinions availible? What is the shaft size on the motor?

Hi Darren,I found this on the Vario site.I 'THINK' that these gears are compatable with Graupner. You'll have to buy one and have a look, they are not that expensive in the sceme of things!

Or the other option is to use a 8s lipo?

hi tim, thanks for the suggestion. the shaft size is 8 mm. i will keep digging.

i thought about 8S but this is a big 90 size bird. the guts are going into the Graupner BO-105 to be painted in the Red Bull colors. i will try your suggestion and set the throttle "curve" to about 85% and watch the temps.

according to the youtube video this is suppose to be a somewhat aerobatic heli. if you haven't seen the video just Google "Red Bull heli" and up it comes. kind of cool. that's my inspiration.

maybe a headspeed of 1600 may not be too bad. for scale landing etc.... maybe i'll just have another flight condition with more expo and less throws.

just a thought. Merry Christmas. thanks again for the suggestion.

you should be able to obtain a much slower headspeed around 1400-1500.

I finally finished my Skalar conversion from a gasser. I believe the setup I have is quite adequate for my kind of flying. I thought I'd share that. Here's what I used:

AXI motor 4130/16
Jeti Spin 77 Opto ESC
Medusa BEC 5V
2 - Zippy 4S1P cell 3500 20-30C (8 cells)
Motor Pinion - 32 teeth
2nd gear - 50 teeth
bottom metal pinion - 15 teeth
bottom main gear - 60 teeth

The gear ratio I input to the Jeti programmer is 9.6 and set at 1,600 rotor rpm. Flying time is around 5-7 minutes at this time (still breaking in the batteries). ESC & batteries barely warm and motor warm.

Performance is good for loops & rolls.
