It can be done but you have to figure out a safe way to do this. Your not going to want to hold a tach over a hovering heli. You will not live long doing so.
If the tach has large numbers so that you can read it from a distance maybe attach the tach to a bracket mounted to the skid.

I tape the tacho to a wooden pole about 3 feet long and hover the heli over it. I found it is IMPOSSIBLE (for me) to read the tacho while keeping the heli still and as close to the tacho as possible, so get a friend to read the tacho while I stand on the other side so the numbers don't distract me. If you can see them, you WILL look at them!

Safety First
What works well for checking head speed the safe way is from underneath the rotor disc? If you have a little time make a heli stand about 5 foot high with clamps to hold the heli in place while you run it up. Also make it heavy to make sure your bird wont get away Grant you it’s hard to bring to a field for set up so do your set up at home. I am lucky I live out on the farm so I just check out, tune and fly.

I taped a dental mirror near the sensor of my glowbee so that when it's layed down, the sensor is reading upwards. The display tilts for easier reading. Then I hover over it to get a reading with the two blade setting.
